Pete Wisdom, In Her Majesty's Secret Service
Duty
Above all things, Wisdom has his duty to his country. Above personal desire, above team needs, above principles and honor and grace, Wisdom has one of the strongest senses of duty in the universe. Almost nothing - from tempting him with his heart's desire to watching the very symbols of his country fall - will make him lose his dedication to the cause of defending the Crown.
Machiavellian
When it comes to playing the long game, Wisdom knows how to win. He's done it multiple times. He's orchestrated the downfall of enemies through drawn-out plans, most notably of which was cheating Dracula himself in war games.
British
Whether it's the snarky humor, the Bond-like charm or the ability to turn his nose up to greater demons and sniff at them, Wisdom is, in line with his duty to it, British. A Londoner and all that goes with it, please and thank you.
Flirt
Long legs, svelte figure? Consider Wisdom talking her up. Call it a defense mechanism when the man's been hurt so much. Call it him being a pig. Point is, he's likely to suggest a shag from some of the many, many, many lovely lasses in the world. Sometimes it works.
Worst Kind of Hero
Pete's a hero in the absolute worst way. He's not noble. He's not honorable. He's not dignified. But he'll take a bullet for a friend's daughter. He'll tell the right person to make the sacrifice play because it's the right play, if not the best play. He'll unleash hell if it saves the world. Wisdom is the sort of hero… the hard kind. The one to do the wrong thing for the right reasons. He has no compunction about killing.
Motivation
Above all things, Wisdom is motivated to ensure the stability, safety, and structure of the United Kingdom. And through it, the world. He has killed the people he loves to ensure it. He has made deals with devils to guarantee it. Less of maintaining a status quo, Pete is proactive in his efforts to ensure nothing threatens the UK, domestic, international, intergalactic or interdimensional.
Goals
Wisdom's current goals are: Make sure the world and the UK don't sink into a fiery hellpit or get eaten by interdimensional monstrosities. Help those who need (or want) to get back to their home dimensions, home. Help those who have chosen to stay… to acclimate. And to help find those that were lost, if at all possible. In the midst of all that, he has an agency to run. And their goals are his goals, as long as he's directing them.
Thermokinesis
Pete Wisdom is capable of generating and manipulating heat, and controlling it to a very fine degree. He can generate plates of pure thermal energy and use them as weapons or shields; their very heat can disintegrate or deflect incoming attacks. He can generate thermal drafts to assist in slowing his descent or as 'heat waves' directed opponents to disorient and tire them from sudden heat exhaustion.
Hot-Knives
The most visible feature of his thermokinetic abilities is the generation of what he calls 'hot-knives', little crystal-like plates and shards of thermal energy, whether solid or intangible. He can generate these from any point on his body, but he prefers to sprout them from his hands or fingers and use them like claws, both cutting and burning, or project them like bullets in volleys from his fingertips. He can make hot-knives of varying sizes, up to two meters in length, and the range when fired is up to 100 meters. They can range in intensity from 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 6000 Kelvin, and he can control them to the degree.
Absorption
Pete's mutant physiology allows him to be constantly absorbing energy. The energy in particular is heat and radiation from starlight, particularly the sun. He is also immune to the effects of environmental and immediate heat, rendering him fireproof and resistant to things like lasers or heat rays. The concussive force of an energy blast would still affect him fully.
Diplomacy
Wisdom is an agent of the Crown of the United Kingdom. In Her Majesty's Service, he runs an organization that acts internationally and domestically. As such he is afforded certain… diplomatic protections and concessions. The best hotels. The ability to skip certain lines to meet very important people. Able to call Captain America at three in the morning and not get fired for it. Throw in certain legal immunities as well. He's not bulletproof, of course. Just almost diplomatically so.
Will
Even when tempted with his heart's desire - having his mother and ex and dead girlfriends all together, old friends too, happy and enjoying a picnic on the moon, or when put face to face with the horror of the things he's done… Wisdom has powered through. He is not immune to mind control. But facing Wisdom with his demons or the things he's lost is the wrong way to go about it with him. Same with torture, or most other forms of coercion. His sense of duty and reality and British cynicism is just too strong. In a world like this, Pete knows what's done is done, and what's dead is dead.
Money
Wisdom works under the authority of Her Majesty (whom he's personally saved, thank you very much). The coffers aren't limitless, of course. But he can call down a helicopter for an evacuation and have it come from the taxpayers if he's on British soil. He also wants for nothing, having every material pleasure sated at a moment's notice, should he really wish it.
MI-13
The Weird Happenings Organization. Black Air. Resources Control Executive. The Special Tactical Reserve for International Key Emergencies. All of these organizations have come and gone. MI-13 remains. The 'weird' branch of the Ministry of Defence. Like MI-6 but with super heroes. Wisdom runs the entire establishment out of a skyscraper in London called the Shard. Under the directive of the Prime Minister, every single super hero that is a subject of the United Kingdom is, by duty to their country, a member of MI-13. In practice this only means so much. But Wisdom can, and has, called upon the likes of many distinctly British super heroes in times of need, and he can, and will likely do so rather often. The organization runs sort of as a sister agency to SHIELD, and they are on relatively good terms. With them Pete has access to British super heroes, an extensive database full of strange information. And certain departments can afford him with magic, or the ability to travel into other worlds, like Otherworld.
Contacts and Old Friends
or intelligence community (except Archie, he's a computerized brain in an android). Captain Britain, Nocturne, Sage, Kitty Pryde, the rest of old Excalibur. Wisdom can even call the Juggernaut as something of a friend. He's fought for them, and they can (and likely will) fight for him, if not provide him with bureaucratic assistance or information, or even a stool to fill at pub.
Alliances
Wisdom is nominally an ally to the X-Men (at least he's a fellow mutant). As director of MI-13, he is also allied with SHIELD, in particular their Europe division. This causes him no end of consternation, but at least he's on a first-name basis with Nick Fury. As a former member of Excalibur, he's on friendly terms with the Avengers. As the politically-arranged husband to Tinkabelinos Hardleg, fairy princess and daughter to Oberon, Faerie King, he has a mutual-assistance treaty with Otherworld. He's even assisted the Exiles before.
Combat
Wisdom has been trained in the use of firearms, heavy weapons, vehicular weapons, and close combat weapons. He has also been trained extensitvely in unarmed combat. He's an excellent marksman with pistols. However he is most skilled in the use of his hot-knives. He has been shown to be so good as to intercept gunfire with them. Now that's precision. He's even jammed them through the heads of super-villains without killing them. Now that's restraint!
Espionage
To say that Wisdom is a master spy is an understatement. He was the star of MI-6. Now he runs the entire superhuman division of the Ministry of Defence. He is supremely skilled in deception, stealth, changing his accent, taking on roles, taking in information and sharing it responsibly.
Intelligence
Wisdom isn't one of the greatest scientists in the world. However, he is one of the smartest men simply by dint of all the information he has at his disposal. What he knows in his own head compares quite impressively to the amount of information he has access to. There are only a handful of other individuals qualified to consult on the supernatural, for instance. Like Blade, Magik and Dr. Strange are certainly above him. But he knows, and has dealt with plenty. He also knows a myriad of languages, as is appropriate for a spy.
Piloting
Nothing special, but Pete can pilot cars, boats, planes and helicopters alike.
Leadership
When you're given the reins of the UK's preeminent organization involving superhuman, affairs, you need to be damned sure you have good management skills. Pete has them, even if people rarely listen to him. He's able to keep the machine turning by bureaucratic know-how as much as knowing how to handle skintights - that is, super heroes and their ilk.
Addict
Sure he's given them up for years, now, but Wisdom was a chain-smoker, some time ago. The pull of nicotine is a strong one. It stresses him out at times, and sometimes he's even had to break for a gum or something. He still drinks - he's British, not a teetotaler.
Haunted
His mother. Sari St. Hubbins. Kitty Pryde. Maureen Raven. John the Skrull. All people that Wisdom has lost, in a sea of many, many more. Wisdom is able to do the hard thing because he takes that responsibility on himself. He stains his own hands to keep clean the hands of nobler sorts. He gives the hardest gifts. Gifts he hates giving. He's done and seen things that would make your average psychic not just blush, but turn away and be sick. He lives with this every day. But he's able to power through it due to his sense of duty.
Snark
People don't always like Pete because he's about as abraisive as they come. He points out the silliness in some folks' viewpoints. Calls people out on their flaws, himself included. Tries to bring others down in some sad, British attempt at keeping cosmic beings down-to-earth. Wisdom can be charming… but he is not a nice man.
Responsibility
Wisdom is bound by the word of the Prime Minister. He is constrained by certain diplomatic affairs, and more than once he's had the political rug pulled from under him. Despite all the 'good works' he does for the Crown, he's still a pawn sometimes, and it galls him to be aware of it.
The Hard Thing
Who else can count themselves among the saviors of the world, to have unleashed unspeakable, ancient evil on it? Who else has fallen in love with points of light in a vast darkness, only to snuff that very light out for the greater good? Wisdom bears the awful weight to do what's necessary, even if it goes against every principle that so-called heroes have. Too often with him… it's better the devil you know.
Pete Wisdom: The Beginning
Wisdom was born in Essex. His sister was Romany, his father Harold. His parents divorced when the Wisdom kids were at an early age. Harold was a Detective Sergeant of Scotland Yard. Romany was interested in the occult. Wisdom was interested in Bond films. He had dreams of becoming an agent of MI-6. In his teens he and his mother had a bit of a row, and he stood her up for a visit. This was unfortunately the day that Michael Robert Ryan decided to single-handed engage in the bloodiest spree killing of Great Britain's history. Wisdom's mother was one of the casualties. He blamed himself for her death. His father did, too.
Pete Wisdom: Growing Pains
The stress of losing his mother had Pete manifest his powers for the first time. It was messy, but he kept them secret successfully for quite some time. His older sister joined the British government, working for their occult offshoot called the Weird Happenings Organization, or WHO, as a researcher and consultant. When he was old enough, he passed his tests with flying colors and joined the Secret Intelligence Service, or MI-6. A dream come true. The life of a spy is full of sordid affairs, and Wisdom got involved with Sari St. Hubbins, a contract killer. Though they swore that neither would let work come between them… Sari was hired to kill the Queen. Wisdom had her put away. This was the start of a long list of bad relationships. As his duty was done in secret, he was personally thanked by the Queen, but he received no official recognition. To protect the integrity of the Crown, St. Hubbins' activities 'never happened.'
Pete Wisdom: Bad Crowds
After his time with MI-6 had him an illustrious career, numerous new skills and capabilities under his belt, his status as a mutant was discovered. He was immediately transferred to Black Air, a weapons research department under the Ministry of Defense who sought out mystic and alien artefacts. He was transferred on as one of their killers. It's hard to leave evidence when your powers do the killing. Pete became excellent at his job. Infiltration and extermination, for Black Air to gather up the remains and take off. He made friends, contacts, favors… and enemies. Though this sort of work wore hard on the man. Killing dozens, even hundreds, over the years had its toll. And after Black Air absorbed WHO to become the preeminent supernatural department of the UK government, Wisdom suffered a breakdown after killing every man, woman and child at a terrorist training camp in Ronsaphan, Thailand.
Pete Wisdom: Excalibur
It helped that he was boffing the head of Black Air at the time, Michele Scicluna, who put him onto consultant duty as a way to cope from his recent breakdown. A broken man, he was assigned to assist the nascent team Excalibur, a gaggle of international superheroes led by none other than Captain Britain. He assisted them in investigations in Genosha, and when he had some personal business to attend to, he was assisted by Kitty Pryde. Mutual attraction bloomed, and the two began a relationship at the same time Wisdom officially joined Excalibur. Both decisions were met with disdain by the other team members. Many adventures were had with the team, including the dissolution and eradication of Black Air, who had worked with the Hellfire Club in a bid to take over the UK. With Wisdom's instrumental help and knowledge, they brought the corrupt branch of the government down. But things were not to last, as Wisdom's relationship with Kitty was strained with his own insecurities and her admittal of nearly cheating on him. He quit Kitty Pryde, and Excalibur. Now without a job, where would the man go?
Pete Wisdom: X-Force
An indepenedent intelligence agent needed friends. He gathered other disillusioned members of the intelligence community and worked to operate above the law - any law. He sought to police other intelligence forces, particularly those that involved mutants, and gathered up another incarnation of X-Force as their leader. He assisted them in their training, and helped give them new purpose. They were quite successful in anti-espionage, taking on other shadow organizations to bring a little transparency to the world. But Wisdom felt his time with them would soon be done. Being based in San Francisco, he missed home, and he missed real duty. So… he faked his death.
Pete Wisdom: Excalibur Redux
In honor of his death, X-Force took on Wisdom's own sister Romany, who had become corrupted and was using alien technology to conduct illegal experiments. She was killed. But Wisdom, who only faked his death, was approached by his old ally Alistaire Stuart. It was at this time the new organization, MI-13, was created. Wisdom was an official agent of the Crown once again, and the UK needed a force it could rally behind. Working with criminals and heroes alike, Wisdom helped re-form Excalibur, but only for a time. It was time enough, however, for them to take on an alternate-reality of X-Men overtaken by the Shadow King, and an alternate reality Captain Britain who took the Sword of Might and called himself Albion. He even helped save the Omniverse when an insane Merlyn and the Mad Jim Jaspers threatened the Starlight Citadel. But this was not to last, of course.
Pete Wisdom: MI-13
Under the Joint Intelligence Committee Chair Grimsdale, Wisdom was the commander of the field team of MI-13. In his stint as an agent, he has generated a political union between the UK and Avalon in a politically arranged marriage between himself and a fairy princess. Restored the Red Dragon of Wales to his prominence… before having him arrested. Awoke a sleeping giant that carried a British town out of the borders of the UK (the village of Wilshire is now on dual diplomatic relations between Britain and Greenland). He even stopped a hostile takeover from HG Wells' Martians, as they invaded this dimension from their own. In that time, Wisdom also cheated on his wife with his coworker, Maureen Raven, mother of Jonathan Raven. The Martians used her clairvoyant brain as a conduit for their cross-over. Wisdom closed it by having her shot. Once again cementing his rocky history with women.
Pete Wisdom: Savior of Britain?
The deeds and machinations of Wisdom have defended and protected the United Kingdom from numerous recent threats… but at great cost. He personally released all the entrapped evils within the magical realms to save the UK. In return, no Skrull can ever set foot on British soil again, under pain of death and eternal torment. He has also become the full director of MI-13, after personally killing Grimsdale, who turned out to be a Skrull in disguise. In addition, his machinations and with the help of MI-13 and other super heroes including Blade, vampires can never set foot upon British soil as well, unless invited to by someone with the authority to allow them into their homeland. Wisdom currently answers to the Prime Minister, but often acts under his own authority, as it has been given appropriately.
Pete Wisdom: The Responsibility Wisdom Brings
Most recently Wisdom has stopped a Duke of Hell from invading London - the creator of the Mindless Ones himself, Plokta. Furthermore, he and many British super heroes banded together to stop Killpower from invading the UK from the depths of Hell, with his army of Psycho-Wraiths and the last remnants of Mys-Tech. Today, Wisdom works alongside SHIELD as their liaison to the UK, and a source of information for all things supernatural and weird. In the wake of the Secret Wars, Wisdom and through him the likes of Captain Britain, are authorities on multidimensional (and omnidimensional) affairs. Wisdom is on frequent duty to assist international governments, SHIELD, and the likes of Reed Richards to assist in bringing back some recovery after the crisis of multiple universes. From a hard youth to a broken man to a dedicated servant of the Crown, Wisdom uses his skill and expertise, doing what is necessary when it's necessary for the stability of the Crown and of the world, with or without any assistance from skintights, thank you very much.
