- Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska Scott is eldest son of Major Christopher Summers and his wife, Katherine Anne.
- When Scott was 12 years old he and his younger brother Alex both lost their parents in a plane crash.
- It was during this plane crash that Scott's mutant powers manifested for the first time. He used his powers to slow their descent from the crashing plane. Scott suffered a head wound upon landing that damaged the part of his brain responsible for controlling his powers.
- Scott and his brother would be separated after the death of their parents. Alex being adopted and Scott left in an orphanage run by a disguised Mr. Sinister.
- Scott's young life would be marred with torture and emotional distress. It wouldn't be until his mid-teens that he would find a way to control his optic blasts (ruby quartz glasses) and find the strength to run away from the orphanage.
- After an accidental and uncontrolled use of his powers in public Scott found himself on the wrong end of an angry anti-mutant mob. Fearing for his life Scott fled, running away from the mob and his life at the orphanage.
- Scot would be found by the mutant criminal Jack Winters who would use Scott and his abilities to further his criminal activities. Scott would eventually be saved by Professor Charles Xavier who offered scott a spot at his School for Gifted Youngsters.
- Here Scott would be trained in the use of his powers and, for the first time in his life, form a real family with his fellow X-Men.
- Scott proved to be a natural born leader becoming the deputy leader of the X-Men and even leading the team in the absence of Professor X for a period of time.
- After the apparent death of Professor Xavier the original team of X-Men would disband only to reform once it was revealed that the Professor was, in fact, alive.
- This reformed team would be defeated and captured by the living island Krakoa.
- Scott would escape returning to Xavier to lead a new team of X-Men. This new team would defeat Krakoa and free the original X-Men, most of whom decided to leave the team.
- Scott would remain as the leader of the new generation of X-Men though they would suffer a loss, the death of Thunderbird, early on that would make Scott question his ability to lead.
- During his time with the X-Men Scott had developed a romantic relationship with Jean Grey. This relationship would persist through even the lusty advances of the Canadian Wolverine and her eventual departure from the team.
- During this time Scott meets his father, now known as Corsair, though he is unaware of their relationship for several years.
- After Jean apparently dies and is reborn as the Phoenix Scott begins to question his relationship with the psychic believing that she is not the same Jean that he fell in love with. His feelings for her are tried and tested but eventually cemented during a battle with Proteus on Muir Island.
- The relationship would once again be tested when the villain Mastermind begins manipulating Phoenix through psychic visions. Through their unique psychic connection Scott was able to help free her from Mastermind's control. Unfortunately here Jean also lost control over the power of the Phoenix Force becoming the Dark Phoenix.
- Ultimately Jean would gain enough control over the Pheonix Force to sacrifice herself seemingly destroying the Phoenix Force in the process. The loss of Jean would have a lasting impact on Scott's life and his role with the X-Men.
- Not long after Jean's death Scott would leave the X-Men to travel on his own. He met, adventured with, and had a brief romance with Lee Forrester but his lingering feelings for Jean kept it from becoming anything too real.
- Eventually Scott would move back to Alaska to be with his family. It's here that he would meet Madelyne Pryor, a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to Jean Grey. Scott felt an instant connection and the two soon fell in love.
- Scott and Maddie were soon married with Maddie becoming pregnant.
- Despite becoming a new husband and soon-to-be-father Scott would return to the X-Men once again begoming their leader.
- Maddie would give birth while Scott was away with the X-Men in France. She would name their son Nathan, something that rubbed Scott the wrong way as it reminded him of a childhood bully who shared the same name. He also wanted to name his son Christopher Charles.
- After the birth of his child Scott would take a brief break from the X-Men where Storm would step up into a leadership role. Upon his return Storm would challenge Cyclops to a one-one-one duel for leadership of the X-Men, a duel Scott would lose.
- Once again Scott would leave the X-Men taking his wife and son back to Alaska with him to work in the family business.
- Domestic life for Scott wasn't all he had hoped it would be. He and Maddie soon became distant and unhappy in their life together.
- Things had gotten so bad that when Scott got the call that Jean Grey was alive and well and his wife gave him an ultimatum that if he left to go see her he should never return that Scott turned and left without a word.
- In a twist it seemed that Jean had lost her telepathic abilities and could not read his mind. Taking advantage of this Scott opted not to tell her about Madelyne or his infant son and instead developing a stoic and distance disposition to hide his guilt for having left them.
- With Jean back the original 5 X-Men reunite as X-Factor. Together they pose as a group of mutant hunters who are, in reality, seeking to help save their fellow mutants.
- During this time Scott's guilt over abandoning his wife and child would lead to a full mental breakdown. A breakdown that would be exacerbated by the apparent disappearance of Maddie and Nate and the emotional manipulation of Cameron Hodge. It would take the help of his teammates and a confession to Jean about Maddie and Nate to get Scott through it all.
- While searching for his lost wife and son X-Factor would watch, along with the rest of the world, as the X-Men seemingly gave their lives in Dallas, Texas. Part of the news footage showed Maddie begging for Scott to find their lost son.
- Scott and Jean would fulfill that promise back in Alaska after uncovering the secret behind the orphanage where Scott grew up. Before they could rescue him, however, baby Nathan would be kidnapped by demons.
- Baby Nathan had been taken by Madelyne who sought to sacrifice the child thus severing her ties with Scott and their shared history forever. She was backed by the demon N'astirh who had transformed her into the Goblin Queen.
- It took the combined efforts of the X-Men, who had to resist and overcome being turned into psuedo-demons, and X-Factor to defeat Madelyne and her demon minions.
- The aftermath of the Inferno saw Cyclops finally confronting the man who had manipulated him for nearly his entire life, Mr. Sinister. With the help of Marvel Girl and his brother, Havok, Cyclops was finally able to confront, defeat, and seemingly kill Sinister.
- With Madelyne gone Scott was finally able to find some peace in the family he always wanted; Jean, Baby Nathan (now called Christopher), and the rest of X-Factor.
- That family life would be shattered with the arrival of Apocalypse who infects Nathan-Christopher with the techno-organic virus. While Apocalypse would ultimately be defeated there was still no known cure for Nathan and the techno-organic virus.
- In order to save his son Scott is forced to let him travel to the far future with the mysterious Askani who promises there he can be cured.
- After teaming with the X-Men once again to defeat the Shadow King X-Factor disbands being formally reabsorbed into the X-Men.
- Scott would become the field leader of the so-called Blue Team. Scott would lead the team against the likes of Omega Red, a returned Mr. Sinister, and a madman named Stryfe.
- Having found some stability and normalcy in his life Scott ultimately decides to propose to Jean Grey hoping to finally solidify the one thing that has been a constant in his life, his love for her. Unfortunately he would never get his wish.
- One morning Scott woke up and found he was in a place that was both familiar and different. It was the future but only slightly so, or so it appeared. Now Scott finds himself lost in a strange new world looking, once again, to find out where exactly he fits within it…
Scott comes from a family of military men. As such it has left him with a strong sense of order and structure. Scott has his routines and he has his structure in life and that's the way he likes it. He's experienced enough chaos and been the victim of too many things he had no control over to just give up parts of his life to whim and fancy. This makes him not the most spontaneous person one would ever meet but it does him him an incredible sense of willpower.
Another aspect of his personality gained from his families ties to the military and military service, loyalty is very important to Scott. Those he calls friends will never need wonder if Scott has their backs, he does, and he assumes the same in reverse (for better or worse). This can leave him open to savvy villains looking to manipulate Scott through his emotions and sense of duty to those he considers allies.
Scott has lost a lot in his life. His parents, his brother (more or less), his son, the love of his life, his wife, and most recently his entire sense of reality. Not to mention losing control of his powers at a very early age. This has given him a fear of losing what he has to the point of becoming overprotective of those he cares about. This can lead to fights with those he's protecting and vulnerabilities that those from the outside can exploit with emotional manipulation.
Cyclops is not one to put his emotions on display. He hides them, buries them, conceals them from those around him. Some of this comes from his experiences with his parents in the military, some from having endured the hardships he has endured, and some of it is just an innate sense of privacy that he's developed over the years. The end result is a man who has a difficult time opening up to others. This often makes establishing those personal connections that he holds so dear difficult.
Being a mutant himself Scott has a strong sense of mutant pride and strives for them to attain a sense of equality with homosapiens. Thanks to the influence of Professor Xavier he seeks peaceful coexistence, he doesn't seek mutant superiority. Scott will put himself in physical danger, to the point of death, to help those mutants who cannot help themselves or are being preyed upon by anti-mutant organizations or individuals.
Scott has all the makings of someone who likes very much to be alone. That could not actually be farther from the truth. Scott actually very much enjoys being around others. In fact he has a natural sense of leadership when in these situations. He's not shy about stepping up and taking control of the situation or guiding people in the right direction.
Scott has not only been removed from his home reality but he's been shunted in time as well. He comes from a when the internet and cell phones were still a ways off, or were had by the wealthy. Thankfully he's a quick study and these things are that far ahead of his own timeline. Even so there may be moments when Scott is a bit at a loss for either his surroundings or the time period he finds himself in.
Cyclops is capable of firing powerful beams of heatless force from his eyes. Due to mild brain damage he suffered as a child he has no control over these blasts and his eye generate them at a near constant rate.
Thankfully Scott is immune to his own powers (as well as those of his brother Alex) so he's able to keep the beams in check simply by closing his eyes. The beams can also be contained by the use of ruby quartz eye gear.
Cyclops is able to control the size of these beams by the use of special apertures in his visor. These can range from narrow, thin beams to large and powerful blasts. The visors were engineered for simplicity allowing him to control the openings with just a touch.
The maximum force of his blasts are unknown but they have been described as having the power to punch a hole in the side of a mountain. In the past he's ruptured steel plates and pulverized rock. He's also been known to severely damage Sentinels and fully armored tanks.
Use of his optic blasts can tire Scott out. Thankfully Scott is at near peak human endurance levels and can last a very long time. In prolonged encounters, however, his blasts can diminish in overall power.
Whether this is just an innate talent or another minor mutant power is unknown but Scott has an uncanny sense of special geometry. This grants him the ability to bounce or reflect his optic blasts in almost any way he feels. This ability has been further enhanced by countless hours of training in the Danger Room. He could bounce beams off of half dozen or so different surfaces in the course of a single optic blast allow him to hit around corners, at impossible angles, or even multiple targets.
As stated earlier Scott is immune to his own powers. He is also immune to the powers of his brother Alex. He is unable to be harmed by other types of energy.
Scott is a founding member of the X-Men (and X-Factor) and has strong ties to both of those teams. Even though he's removed from his own world this reality is similar enough that those ties may still exist, Scott may just have to prove himself a bit is all. This gives him access to a tremendous amount of potential resources such as individual team members, the X-Mansion, and other resources directly connected to the X-Men.
Scott is possessed of both a natural sense of willpower and a high level of training in resisting mental assaults. This includes resisting torture or mind control as well as other more subtle manipulations of his thoughts and emotions. He's not immune by any means but he is certainly harder to manipulate, intimidate, or break mentally than even your average soldier.
Cyclops is a natural born leader and he's had that natural ability trained and honed through the years as a leader of both the X-Men and X-Factor. Cyclops is able to focus a team and make them more efficient as a group. He knows how to compensate for weaknesses and take advantage of strengths.
Scott is an expert pilot of fixed wing aircraft, a skill he picked up from his father. His natural aptitude for spatial geometry assists him with his piloting as well.
Cyclops has had extensive training in martial arts and unarmed combat. He holds black belts in Judo and Aikido. In the past he's held his own against the likes of Wolverine and Captain America.
Scott Summers is a mutant. While he would argue till the day he dies that this is not a disadvantage it does in fact come with some inherit drawbacks. First and foremost he's susceptible to mutant detection and anti-mutant abilities and technology. It also puts him at a disadvantage in certain social situations given the strong vein of anti-mutant belief.
Scott's optic blasts are always on. If his eyes are open he's firing them. The only way he can control them in any form is either by closing his eyes (thus rendering himself blind) or using ruby quartz eyewear. This obivously poses a number of problems for him. If he's not careful he could be unleashing unholy devastation on the area around him or he could be left blind without his visor or glasses.
Scott has been removed both from his home reality and time. The world is similar to the one he came from but seems to be advanced 5-10 years. This gives Scott a feeling of being just a bit off from time to time. People aren't quite how he remembers, technology is just a bit more advanced, events may not have transpired exactly how he remembers, Etc. and so on.
