It's the same hard-luck story as many. Born into a family from Iowa with an abusive, alcholic father, a weak mother, and an older brother that took care of him early on, Clint Barton had it rough. Most of his time when not in school was spent in the family's barn, hiding from his father (and responsibilities). More often than not, his brother Barney (Charles Bernard Barton) would defend his baby brother and both would end up being beaten and sent to bed. One of those times, Clint was beaten so badly that he'd lost his hearing, and for a time, it was thought that his hearing wouldn't return. (Thankfully, it did. In the meantime, Clint learned sign language.)
Neither of the boys cried when their parents were killed in a car accident when Clint was 8 and Barney was 11. They did hop from foster home to foster home, never truly finding a place until the boys ran away to the Carnival.
It was at the carnival that Clint had a bow put into his hands for the first time. His tutor felt that the boy was a natural, and taught him, refined his skill. He was also taught how to use a sword, but it was never as proficient as his use of the bow. The carnival wasn't all that he'd hoped it would be, however, and when Clint got older, he realized that his tutors weren't the men he'd thought they were. They parted ways (with more than a little violence), and for the first time, Clint was on his own.
Him and his bow. He'd managed to keep eating and find a roof over his head with petty crime, but it wasn't something he was happy with. Along the way, he'd picked up a partner, and the pair were able to do bigger and better things… until such time as Clint was picked up by SHIELD, having been put onto their RADAR due to his partner. SHIELD made him an offer he simply couldn't refuse, and soon after, brought his partner in crime aboard as well. Ever since? He's toed the line.
Hawkeye -knows- he's good. He's taken punches, he's taken on fights that by all rights he should have lost, and has come out on the other side. He's more than aware that if a hint of doubt ever creeps in, mistakes can be made and lives can be lost.
Just like a good dog. Once he makes a friendship, there is little that he wouldn't do for that person, and on extension, an organization. Should those two things conflict, he has a need to find out -why-, which could set him in the middle of things. He is both ready to kill and ready to die should it be called for (though he'd rather not die!).
If something passes Hawkeye's notice and he feels that it needs to be followed, he's on it. He's an opportunist, full in the knowledge that in his line of work, time truly is of the essence. As a result, sometimes he ferrets out more than anticipated, and is able to draw more lines to fully draw a picture.
He believes in being the best and only the best will do. In his line of work, Hawkeye can't afford to be 'halfway there', or, as a normal human in a world with supers, 'bad things' could happen. This brings something of an intensity to his work that may not be present in his personal life. This, of course, feeds into his confidence.
Hawkeye's particular skill set pretty much leads to being alone on a perch, waiting for that perfect shot. (Or multiple perfect shots.) As a result, he's grown used to being alone and seems to truly enjoy it. With few -true- friends, it's easy to pull back and find some time alone. This doesn't mean that he won't reach out when he does need help (usually), but he does ike to try things on his own before he brings anyone into the mix.
When Hawkeye starts something, he is 'all in', that borders on the obsessive and can be to the detriment of his personal or professional life. He lives and breathes the 'mission', whatever that may be. Ready to move or to act on a moment's notice, he doesn't give much thought to that which he leaves behind. This has cost him a great deal- including any hope of normalcy or a 'real life'.
Hawkeye trusts his instinct, and will follow it even if it goes against direct orders. There have been more than a few times when it's led him astray, only to find that the strands of a mystery are unraveled to the point where things begin to make sense. However, most notably, when given a 'kill order', if the target -feels- wrong, he won't 'take the shot'.
Coffee! No, really. Coffee. Okay, he wants to see 'right' win. He -believes- in 'right'. Even when he was wrong, he believed he was 'right'. This all stems from the feeling of 'wrongness' in the loss of his parents, and the complete 'unfairness' of it all. And the disloyalty discovered when he found that his mentor was stealing from the Carnival that had taken him in, put a tent over his head, food on the table and paid him? Of course he'd be upset; but rather than stay on, that particular experience, both finding himself at odds with both his brother AND his mentor, made him simply want to leave and not look back.
Hawkeye eventually would like to be able to retire and live an actual 'real life'. Everything thus far in his life has conspired against him in that order, and the chances are good that he'll never attain that unless he simply turns around and walks away. And that, he'll never do. He can't do it.
OOCly, I'd love to have him make some solid friendships and build on that foundation of teamwork. He is a loner, yes, and works best in a solitary postion, but this can (and does) work well in terms of 'air support'.
Never far from him in any form, whether hanging on the wall in his apartment, in the back seat of a car, in a dufflebag for work, or in a hard plastic case. He has only ONE shiny bow, the one with all the blinky lights, which is linked to his specialized quiver. With a touch on the handle, the arrows rotate around and are at his hand immediately after, or it will attach a point to an untipped arrow, giving him a choice in specialized arrows. His bows are of various poundages for his pull, but the special one pulls at about 250#, and compacts down into a smaller package, making it easier to carry around.
Hawkeye's life sometimes depends upon the fact that he has speciality tips for his arrows. He's got a number of tips which are but not limited to, a grapple tip that holds a fine line for him to either climb or zip-line down, a putty arrow, net arrow, a boomerang arrow, a USB arrow (he shoots it and it lands in the USB slot to deliver virus' or to hack in..), an RC tip, an EMP/ECM tip.. and anything else that can be thought of an implimented by either himself or SHIELD R&D. Whether he's made them or SHIELD R&D has made them, not all his tips are on the ends of shafts. Those that he doesn't have attached are in a cookie jar that is in the kitchen in his apartment. Unmarked. Uncataloged. They can be used as thrown weapons as well, but they may not be quite as effective.
Hawkeye has it. In spades. He never misses, unless he means to, and he can use pretty much anything as a thrown weapon, only to have it hit just where he wants it. Hand/eye coordination is something he's been working on since he was just a kid, and now it's just a matter of perfecting it. In times where there isn't any pressing work to be done, he'll do sleight of hand, he'll play a game of darts, a game of toss the card and throw a knife through the center- he's always challenging himself.
Hawkeye has extremely good eyesight. Perhaps it's because he'd been deafened so many times, from when he was a child, to a close up and personal visit with a grenade to a couple of arrows being shoved in his ears that the other senses have come to the fore. Not only does he have perfect eyesight, thanks to SHIELD training, he's got the ability to play 'what's wrong with this picture' while high in his nest looking down at the field.
Employed by SHIELD, it is both an asset and a detriment. With SHIELD comes their safe houses, their contacts, their specialized intelligence, their specialized weaponry, and, of course, the cool toys to play with (Quinjets and the helicarrier).
While out on his own, over the years, he's made friends, influenced people (and honked some of them off pretty badly) and can then safely (and sometimes not too safely) contact them for help or information. Once in SHIELD, he has access to other contacts (for good or ill), that can either help him or hinder him. It has also allowed him to make contacts FOR SHIELD that they might not have initially had or could have.
SHIELD granted: Because of his position and particular skill set, Hawkeye has security clearances that most would not even begin to dream about.UN writing a paper about a hot spot? What redaction? Mind, not as high as Fury's, but it's pretty respectable. It'll get him anywhere he really needs to go.
One of the best archers in the world. The 'shooting the aspirin out of the air' trick is old hat. He can expertly calculate wind, direction, distance and time-to-target without even thinking about it. All instinct. On foot, while falling out of windows, while hanging out of cars going at high speed. He can also maintain his equipment and build new arrows, though some of the fancier designed ones need some input by scientists. All this he learned over the course of years under direct mentorship while at the Carnival. Not only did this serve him well as a sideshow as a youth, but also gave him some skills to earn a dollar or two once he left.
Anything that can be thrown can instantly become a weapon in Hawkeye's hands. Playing card to the neck? Ouch. Rocks? Bottles? He throws them with deadly precision to best effect. This too was learned at the Carnival, by his mentor. It started out as a 'hand/eye' exercise, and became yet another draw at the Carnival (knife/apple, knife/cards); and also became one of those skills that can save his bacon should he be without his prime weapon. Even a distraction is helpful. (Also helpful at winning poorly made stuffed animals at boardwalk games that require hand/eye coordination. Like the ring toss.)
Not anywhere near as good as thrown, but respectable. Not his 'go to'. Once again, he learned this from his mentor at the circus, but never truly excelled at it like the others skills. He is able to hold his own and use it to effect enough to be able to disengage from combat and retreat in order to use his -main- skills, but that really is about it. Though, under the tutelage, the motto: 'Never let there be a weapon that you cannot use' was virtually a hard and fast rule. (After all, his mentor had plans for him!)
Not bad as a street fighter. Will actually use his bow as a bludgeon if need be. (Ouch.) This is something that had a foundation at the carnival but was expanded and built upon once brought into the fold of SHIELD. Hours and hours of sparring spent with some of SHIELD's finest trainers, working on weaknesses, building strength, dexterity and resiliency makes makes Clint a formidable opponent.
Having spent a good deal of time in SHIELD, Hawkeye has climbed the ladder of abilities; and having him be able to be one of the 'elite' and fly one of their jets had been one of his goals. Good depth perception, an advanced understanding of flight characteristics and basic physics meant that Hawkeye would be a natural fit to learn to fly. Starting out with the basics (Cessna), he worked hard to learn, and soon enough, was a good 'fit' for one of their vaunted 'VTOL' aircraft. He flies with ease and precision. While not one of the Top Guns, he has enough ability to hover the aircraft, and should he need to, to land one on an abbreviated field (boat, small landing zone, on the roof of a building, etc.)
Hawkeye is a quick study. From getting into places where he's not supposed to being able to beat feet before that final explosion, he's learned from the best. As a Field Agent, training in espionage is one of the basics to survival. And what agency doesn't want their investment to survive? So, from basic lockpicking to 'showmanship' and bravado (skills he learned as a sideshow at the carnival), to electronic surveillance and infiltration, he is the well-rounded spy. All of this in the interest of getting close in order to 'take that shot'.
It's served him well. Hawkeye can ride falls, can tumble and land (reasonably well) from heights (though sometimes, he really can't..), can jump from building to building, from 'nest to nest'. It's something that has helped keep him alive when he really shouldn't be. The basics he'd learned over the years in the carnival; how can one entertain the multitudes that come to see the show without all that showmanship? It's while in SHIELD that he's perfected the art (mostly) of being able to fall and still be in total control to be able to finish the job (take the shot, etc..)
American Sign Language. He's got some passable ability with it as well as for reading lips. (In English only.) Having had several bouts of some sort of hearing deprivation over the course of his life, the first time while still a child and his mother's concern led him to its use, he's had the need to learn the skills of American Sign Language as well as learning how to read lips (The latter also a skill encouraged by SHIELD.) . It's not something he likes to use; when he does use it, it usually means he doesn't have his hearing aid in and that he probably won't be speaking in conjunction with it.
Playing with the big boys, and he's only human. No special healing ability, no mutant powers, no edge other than that which is trained and honed.
Good or bad, Hawkeye's lived a life enough to accumulate them both personally and professionally. Personally, through the list of foster homes and orphanage, he's managed to annoy both foster family members and civil servants alike. Though none of them hold a candle to those from the Carnival. Having bested rivals in their chosen vocations, he's made more than a few enemies. Couple that with actively going after his mentor and his cronies, and there are some days when Clint looks over his shoulder more than others. Adding to his arsenal of enemies are the SHIELD opponents. They're not quite as personal, but because of his employer, he does have those who would kill him just because of that.
They say that 'third time is the charm'. Clint's had experience here, from childhood to a grenade up close and personal, and now arrows in the ears by one of his many enemies (SEE: Enemies). Yup. No word as to whether or not it's temporary or permanent, but 80 of his hearing is gone. The doctors remain hopeful that some level will be restored. Relying upon a hearing aide, Clint still relies more upon reading lips, or when it's not in, sign language works.
