Part I: Abusive Childhood
- Mary Jane "MJ" Watson was the younger of Philip and Madeline Watson's daughters, born in Montoursville, PA, four years after her sister Gayle.
- Philip was an alcoholic who frequently uprooted his family, moving every time he changed jobs, as well as taking out his frustrations on his family through emotional and physical abuse.
- In reaction to the abuse and constant relocations, MJ cultivated an extroverted and care-free demeanor which helped her make new friends after school transfers and served as a mask for her distress about her home life.
- Madeline put up with the abuse until the first time Philip struck one of the girls, Gayle. She took MJ and her sister when she left Philip and lived as itinerants for a few years, moving between various relatives' homes.
Part II: Teen Years
- MJ was thirteen and staying with her Aunt Anna in Queens when she first saw Peter Parker. At the time she thought he was nerdy and uninteresting.
- The Watson women finally settled in Pittsburgh, moving in with Madeline's widower uncle, Frank Brown, in time for MJ to enter high school where she joined the drama club to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.
- MJ distanced herself from Gayle, whose sweetheart married her after getting her pregnant, when she saw familiar despair in her brother-in-law's eyes.
- MJ was fifteen and visiting Aunt Anna for Thanksgiving the night Anna's neighbor, Ben Parker was killed. That night she saw Peter run home and then depart through a window as Spider-Man. Unsure about how this changed her feelings about the sixteen year old and feeling it was his secret to share, MJ chose to not tell anyone what she saw that night.
- Gayle returned home when she became pregnant again and her husband abandoned her. Then Madeline became sick and died. MJ, who had already quit drama club to get an after-school job to help out ran away when Gayle made it clear she expected MJ to sacrifice her dreams to help support the growing family.
Part III: Aspiring Actress and Her College Friends
- MJ went to New York and stayed with Aunt Anna until she earned enough dancing and waiting tables to rent a studio apartment in Manhattan, but even after moving out on her own she continued to visit her aunt frequently.
- Following high school, MJ kept working the same type of jobs while auditioning for acting and modeling gigs and attending college at the same time.
- MJ and Peter's aunts finally succeeded at setting them up and they dated a few times before he introduced her to his college friends: Flash Thompson, Gwen Stacy, and his roommate, Harry Osborn.
- MJ started dating Harry when Peter called it off with her to date Gwen. The two couples interacted often but the relationships of the group were a complicated tangle of tension and jealousy because MJ competed with Gwen over Peter's attentions and flirted shamelessly with him frequently.
- MJ finally met Spider-Man face-to-mask when he saved her from being used as a human shield when some goons attacked the club she was working at.
Part IV: The Death of Gwen Stacy
- The previous status quo came crashing down around MJ and her friends when one of Spider-Man's earliest enemies, the Green Goblin, abducted Gwen then caused her death during a fight between them to rescue her. It became instantly worse when the Goblin died trying to kill Spider-Man and it was discovered he was Harry's father, Norman Osborn.
- MJ went to Peter's apartment to console him after she heard the news. When he got there, ignorant of her personal history, he accused her of being incapable of being upset if her own mother had died. Knowing that was the pain talking, she forgave him and stayed to help him though his grief anyway.
- Not long after his father's death, Harry snapped and secretly took up the Green Goblin mantle.
- MJ, unaware of his activities but deeply concerned about his increasing instability, broke up with Harry shortly after the Green Goblin's "return," stating that she was tired of Peter's depression and wanted to cut ties with him and anyone he associated with.
- Eventually Peter recovered and began to fall in love with MJ again.
Part V: MJ and Peter, Act One
- A number of months later, at a party, MJ told Peter how she felt about him but that she wasn't ready for anything serious. She did not confess that this was because of a fear of getting hurt stemming from her past.
- As the Green Goblin, Harry bombed the party nearly killing MJ and Peter. MJ was hospitalized for her injuries and Peter remained by her side until she fully recovered.
- A few weeks after her recovery, MJ accompanied Peter to the airport to see him off on a trip to Europe. They shared a passionate good-bye kiss which, following his return to New York, lead to them dating again.
- Months later Peter proposed to MJ with the ring hidden inside a Cracker Jacks(tm) box; claiming she wasn't ready to settle down, she said no.
- MJ and Peter stayed friends but she grew distant. Then, after graduating college, she moved to Florida with Aunt Anna to help her "settle in" when it was really an excuse to get away from Peter and Spider-Man for a time.
Part VI: MJ and Peter, Act Two
- Upon her return to New York, MJ began her modeling career in earnest and started dating a string of actors and other famous people.
- Months later MJ went to visit Peter only to witness him fighting Puma as Spider-Man. Afterwards, she revealed she had known his secret for years and they opened up to each other, confiding their life stories to each other.
- MJ and Peter tried being friends but then realized they were hiding their true feelings from each other. He proposed again and, after a short trip to Pittsburgh where she reconciled with Gayle while considering it, MJ accepted.
- MJ's uncle, Judge Spencer Watson, presided over their wedding on the front steps of New York City's City Hall. Instead of replacing her maiden name with his, MJ chose to become Mary Jane Watson-Parker.
- After honeymooning in France, the newlyweds moved into a Manhattan condo MJ got them with the proceeds from her modeling career.
Part VII: The Breathtaking Spider-Wife
- One day, MJ came home to find Venom in the shadows of their Chelsea apartment, waiting for Peter. Initially, because he wore a costume resembling the symbiote, she thought Venom was Peter. While Venom didn't hurt MJ, the encounter terrified her so much that when Peter finally got home he found her in tears and she begged him to stop wearing the black costume.
- Even after Peter switched to using the red and blue costume exclusively, MJ was unable to get over Venom's "visit" while living in that apartment so they moved to Queens where they lived with Peter's Aunt May.
- MJ got a job on a soap called "Secret Hospital" but quit after being attacked by a deranged fan who was angry about what her character did on the show.
- Peter left the city for a while to sort things out after his parents returned then turned out to be imposters. While he was absent, MJ visited her sister and nephews in Pittsburgh.
- Shortly after MJ and Peter's reunion, MJ found out she was pregnant.
Part VIII: MJ's Pregnancy Troubles
- MJ's first trimester passed without a hitch. She was even able to continue modeling though the entire period, although towards the end she was modeling fashionable maternity clothes.
- When MJ's pregnancy puts her modeling career on hiatus, she began voice acting in re-dubs of Japanese anime as well as Western cartoons including the immensely popular Lensman cartoon.
- As MJ approached her third trimester complications began cropping up putting her and the baby at risk. Her OB/GYN became overwhelmed so Peter reached out to SHIELD though the Avengers. SHIELD sent Dr. Barbara Morse to help; after a week of exams and tests, she was able to stop the complications with a concoction of immunological boosters and anti-radiation drugs.
- After MJ's due date past, her medical team (headed by Dr. Morse) hospitalized her. There, an agent of the Green Goblin (Harry Osborn) poisoned MJ, putting her life at risk while inducing labor. MJ's life was saved but the baby was reported stillborn but was taken before she could be examined properly.
Part IX: MJ's Postpartum Complications
- MJ's health continued declining after the delivery and Dr. Morse's treatments were losing effectiveness making the situation look desperate.
- Dr. Seward Trainer, a geneticist and a former associate of the High Evolutionary and Miles Warren (aka the Jackal, one of Peter's enemies), approached Peter and MJ offering his assistance.
- Barbara, Peter and Seward worked together to determine that MJ's was suffering from fetal cell microshimerism. They formulated a cure using low doses of radiation and Peter's blood plasma. MJ's physique was altered to near peak human levels as a side effect.
- MJ went through a brief bout of depression over the loss of the baby before resuming her acting and modeling careers.
- MJ leveraged her improved physique to land the role of Captain Gemma T Kirk in the action film revival of Star Trek.
Part X: The Thrilling Spider-Wife
- MJ's plane exploded returning to New York from LA and she was thought to have died. In actuality, she had been abducted by a telepathic mutant before the flight took off.
- MJ's abductor was an obsessed fan who wanted to replace her husband. MJ hoped to be able to convincing him to let her go by persuading him to connect deeply with Peter's mind and his sense of morality. She did not foresee his committing suicide when this worked. After returning home MJ spent months in therapy.
- After Aunt May's house was burned to the ground, the family moved into Stark Tower and Peter became a member of the Avengers.
- Rumors in the tabloids had MJ cheating on her husband with Tony Stark after a paparazzi caught a shot of her entering the tower late at night. Eventually Tony put a stop to the rumors.
Part XI: The Metahuman Safeguard Act
- Luckily for the Avengers, Aunt May and MJ were residing in Stark Tower when news came that the US Congress was working on a Superhero Registration Act because they took Mr. Stark to task when they caught him discussing plans to build additional privatized prisons in anticipation of the new law.
- By working with the lawmakers the name and nature of the act was changed. Below is a summary of the Metahuman Safeguard Act:
- As defined in the act, a metahumans were an individual with superhuman abilities, powers and/or technology.
- The act categorized metahumans as registered or unregistered.
- The act makes it illegal for unregistered metahumans to use their abilities in public or on private property without the owner's permission.
- The act allows for the registration of a secret identity, but an unregistered secret identity is considered an unregistered metahuman like any other.
- Registered metahumans can be sectioned with legal enforcement powers as individuals or on a team.
- Sanctioned metahumans submit to government oversight but are provided medical and psychological aid in exchange.
Part XII: Spider-Ma'am
- MJ supported Peter when he told her he had decided to publicly unmask after registering.
- The Avengers were the first sanctioned team and other nations soon passed similar laws and invited the Avengers into their borders as well.
- Needing to expand their membership to meet the global demand for Avengers, the Avenger Academy is established.
- MJ was invited to join the first class of students at the academy by Administrator Potts. Since MJ was deemed effetely unpowered by the oversight committee, Pepper asked Tony to make something for her so he built her a version of the Iron Spider armor he had previously made for Peter.
- As part of her Academy training, MJ began accompanying Peter on his patrols of New York. Although her official codename was Iron Spider-Woman, since she was publically known to be Spider-Man's wife many New Yorkers took to calling her "Spider-Ma'am".
Part XIII: Strange New World
- MJ was assigned to the Stark Tower in New York when she graduated.
- MJ threw a huge party the night of her graduation with attendees ranging from her fellow Avengers, celebrities and others.
- The morning after the graduation party, MJ awoke alone, in an unfamiliar apartment in a New York City that was subtly different from the one she went to bed in with nothing but her armor and memories of Earth-702.
- Between June 1st, 2016 and mid-August, MJ initially kept a low profile. By watching the news and checking Wikipedia (which she was glad to find existed on this strange world), MJ quickly found that the Avengers had disbanded here, leading to a short term goal to focus on while looking for a way to reunite with her husband (as she found she wasn't married to the Peter Parker of this world).
- MJ also began to carefully pick up the life of her native counterpart, getting modeling jobs and studying the diaries she found in her apartment.
- As of August 21st, MJ had not discovered her employment by Stark Industries nor had Stark Industries contacted her about her repeated No-Shows.
Augmented Physique
When a case of fetal cell microshimerism was threatening to kill her, MJ was given a treatment which combined radiation therapy and blood plasma from her husband, Peter Parker. In addition to curing her, it augmented MJ's physique. As a result, she can lift more than twice her weight with minimal effort, exert herself at peak capacity for over half an hour before beginning to fatigue and challenge human land speed records. She also has exceptional agility, balance, flexibility, and reaction time. Additionally, her immune system and senses also operate at peak efficiency.
Iron Spider Armor
MJ's Iron Spider armor is composed of protein-scale nano-technology powered by a zero-point energy generator and is controlled via a neural interface with an integral microprocessor. The suit provides the following benefits:
- It provides strength augmentation by a factor of twenty up to an intrinsic limit of five tons. (In MJ's case this allows her to lift up to four tons under ideal conditions with maximum effort.)
- It is resistant to small arms fire ("bulletproof"), insulated against temperatures up to 1000°C ("fireproof"), and provides full NBC filtration and has an eight minute supply of compressed air for underwater use. Additionally its inner workings are EMP shielded.
- Sections of the armor can be detached to use as containment for hazardous materials.
- Micro- or macroscopic access ports can be opened in the skin of the suit to allow organics to pass. They auto dilate when required, such as when MJ utilizes her web slingers.
- Its color changing surface provides active camouflage and can also mimic any of the historical Spider-Man or -Woman costumes as well as clothing.
- Microscopic fibers from its surface allow for wall crawling on most surfaces.
- It has an integral com suite which includes the following:
- A short range radio which can also link to cellular networks
- An integral police, fire and emergency scanner
- An built in voice changer/amplifier which can be used to disguise its wearer's voice and as an electric megaphone
- It has the following audio and visual sensory features are available when the "helmet" is active:
- Microphones with omnidirectionally or shotgun functionality (The sounds are modulated to safe levels for the wearer.)
- Integral optics can provide up to 10× magnification, for microscopic or telescopic viewing, and have infrared and night vision modes
- The suit can accept microSD cards for storage of photos or a/v recordings (The cards can be swapped out and the suit can support up to three at one time.)
- By touching wrist to mid-thigh, the suit can become a wingsuit by forming a set of web-like patagium under the arms. This allows for gliding, but a properly trained wearer can "fly" properly harnessing wind currents and thermal uplifts.
- It has four seven and a half-foot long mechanical spider-arms (called "waldos") which can be retracted into the golden, shallow dome-shaped backpack the entire suit stows itself in. They extended to full length in a second. Cameras and mics built into them allow them to be used to look or hear around corners and three small, mutually opposable digits at their tips allow for precise manipulation.
Web Shooters
MJ has her own personal web-shooters given to her by her husband. They are improved from his original model in that when in contact with her armor they generate their own basic web fluid from atmospheric carbon and nitrates which is stored in removable compartments. While her web shooters can support alternate forms of web fluid, but neither MJ nor they are capable of producing them.
Apartment
MJ has a fully furnished apartment in Manhattan which was rented by the Mary Jane native to Earth-616. It is now hers for the time being.
Contacts
MJ has access to the native MJ's contacts, many of whom she actually knew in her world, additionally, MJ knows a large number of the Avenger's Earth-702 analogs. The first group she can contact with ease, to get acting and modeling jobs or the like. While the second group may not know MJ themselves, her knowledge about them and the Avengers may open doors for her with them.
Wealthy
MJ has access to her Earth-616 counterpart's money. While the native MJ wasn't a multi-millionaire, she had quite a bit of money due to insurance payoffs on a couple of clubs that were destroyed by metahuman conflict and a stream of income from modeling and other jobs. MJ can live comfortably on this income and the interest from her savings as long as she doesn't spend money like it grows on trees.
Avenger
MJ was an Avenger in her world and was accepted as a member in this world on 15 Aug 2016 (vetted by Black Widow for SHIELD on 19 August 2016 and since also passed a SHIELD psych evaluation). As such she has access to the Avengers mansion, the information in the team's records, and team resources including quinjets and sky cycles (for team related/sponsored activities) as well as an Avengers Identicard (see below).
Identicard: An Avengers Identicard is a credit card-sized device which not only is a photo ID (in MJ's case it shows her masked identity), but is also a communications device and can be used by the Avengers to track its bearer; MJ keeps hers inside her suit.
Triple Threat
MJ is, in the vernacular of the entertainment industry, a triple threat. She is an extraordinary actor (with which she can deceive as well as delight), dance (modern and classic forms, although she is weak in ballet), and sing (she is a talented mezzo-soprano with little formal training) extremely well as she has been cultivating these skills since high school.
College Education
MJ has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While her major was Theatre, she still had to complete a broad range of subjects including basic math, general science, world history, literature, etc.
Modeling and Fashion Sense
Being a successful model requires a wide variety of related skills. They include timing, poise, and the ability to know how to stand and move to accent your appearance and attire. MJ has mastered them all.
Additionally, after years around the fashion industry, she has developed an exquisite fashion sense. While MJ doesn't have all of the technical skills of a professional fashion designer she able to fake it well enough that only people with direct ties to the business can tell.
"Everywoman" Skills
There are certain skills which mark a person as incompetent if they are missing them. As MJ is not fundamentally incompetent in any way this means that, among other things, she can adapt to any modern computer GUI relatively easily, cook a decent and tasty meal (especially with a good recipe), perform basic first aid (and CPR as well), perform minor household repairs, and ride a bicycle.
Swimming
While it may be easy for her now, MJ used to have to work to keep in shape. One of her primary forms of exercise was swimming and she still enjoys the activity. She was a competent swimmer even before her physique was augmented.
Parkour
In addition to swimming and traditional exercise, MJ began learning parkour in a gym shortly after getting married to get a feel for her husband's "other life" and this training became more intense at the Avengers Academy. This form of acrobatics allows her to maneuver around, over and through obstacles in a monkey-like fashion.
Motor Vehicle Operation
MJ is skilled at driving cars, light trucks, SUVs, and vans as well as riding motorcycles. Having received intensive training from professional stunt drivers for some of the films she has made, MJ is more capable than the average driver when operating these vehicles (especially cars and motorcycles).
Handgun Proficiency
Long before MJ became an Avenger she took self-defense courses. Some of those involved using handguns and she became a skilled amateur.
Legal Protocol and Procedures
As part of her training at the Avengers Academy in Earth-702, MJ was taught protocol for interacting with LEOs and their agencies as well as general procedures to deal with criminals.
Public Relations
Since Administrator Potts intended MJ to be a public face for the Avengers, part of her Academy training was to prepare her for that role. This included the art of giving a good interview and public speaking skills.
Quinjet Pilot
As part of her basic Avengers Academy training, MJ was taught to pilot the Quinjets. This allows her to fly any sort of plane, although the lack of familiarity with other aircraft would make any non-Quinjet challenging.
Unarmed Combat
MJ received hand-to-hand combat training while at the Avengers Academy (in Earth-702). She has three preferred styles, one she primarily uses while wearing her armor and the other two she uses when she is not, depending on her goal in the fight. However, she can blend things up when necessary and combine or switch styles.
As Iron Spider-Woman, MJ's combat style takes advantage of having up to four additional limbs and can be highly aggressive when necessary. It focuses on flexibility and mobility for defense and on strikes and takedowns for offense. (This is based on a combination of Aikijutsu, Capoeira, and Krav Maga with aspects of Parkour mixed in as well.)
MJ's combat styles when not using her armor are Aikijutsu or Krav Maga. The former is an older and more practical form of Aikido which still has that style's ability to redirect her opponent's greater force against them and so is her strongly defensive while the latter is an aggressive style with an "a good offense makes a great defense" attitude that focus on locks, strikes and throws.
Websliinging
MJ was instructed in the art of slinging webs by her husband, both before and at the Avengers Academy. While she is not a master of weaving webbing like her husband, she has great accuracy and can create basic netting as well.
Wingsuit Flight
MJ has been trained in the art of harnessing thermal drafts and the force of the wind to extend wingsuit "flight" by maintaining or even gaining altitude given the correct environmental factors.
Ambivert
MJ is an Ambivert, falling nearly dead center on the extravert-introvert scale. While she seems to thrive off being around other people and puts forth an energetically gregarious demeanor she can become uncomfortable in large groups (but hides this well) and relishes the occasional time away from others.
Flirtatious
MJ enjoys flirting. Formerly she made frequent use of it as an emotional defense, but only rarely anymore. She doesn't discriminate by gender either, although she will flirt with men more readily than women.
Loyal
MJ's friends, even those she hasn't opened up her emotional walls to, can count on her to help them in any way she can.
Emotional Walls
MJ comes across as an open and sometimes bubbly young woman. In truth, she is quite reserved about showing her true feelings or sharing her aspects of her past, especially her family history, in order to avoid getting hurt. Once she comes to trust a person, however, she will share her feelings and history openly with them.
Instinct to Retreat
MJ is not a coward but in the past her best defense from emotional and physical harm was to run away. While she has mostly conquered this instinct she still possesses it and, at the very least, it could cause her to hesitate from time to time as she considers giving into it even for a moment.
Motivation
MJ, having embraced the heroic ideal of being an Avenger and the status of "Spider-Ma'am" (as she was sometimes called in her world after Peter went public as Spider-Man), is driven to help others and try to make the world a better place for everyone in it.
Goals
MJ is working towards the following goals, listed roughly in descending order of long to short term:
- MJ wants to find a way to reunite with her husband (Spider-Man of Earth-702). If that means returning home, so be it, but this is purely a result-driven goal.
"I miss having Peter to talk to." (Peter is my soul mate.)
- As an Avenger, MJ feels the need to rebuild the public image of the Avengers and get them assembled again.
"The world needs the Avengers and the Avengers need the world."
- MJ hopes to make her world, even if it isn't "her" world, a better place. This does not always mean being a superhero, but that doesn't hurt.
"Those who can help should."
- MJ has always had and always will have the itch to perform. She was an actress on stage and screen in her world and this world's MJ's past provides her an excellent foundation. She wants to continue her acting career.
"Acting allows me to put on a mask I am not hiding behind."
- MJ is curious about the analogs to the people she knew in her world. She knows she may find them unacceptably different, until she finds out this is going to be a nagging concern in the back of her mind.
"Family and friends are the meat and spices of life. You can survive without them, but survival isn't living."
Faulty Knowledge
Be it details about cities she's familiar with (LA, New York and Pittsburgh primarily), the nation, the Avengers or anything else, MJ's knowledge could be completely wrong due to it coming from a different version of Earth.
Not Quite Super
Without her Iron Spider armor, MJ is still fundamentally human despite her augmented physique. Additionally, she still registers as an altered human to sensors and tests for such status despite the fact that her "abilities" are not actually superhuman.
Recognizable Face
The native MJ is a minor celebrity in Earth-616, having been a model for years and staring in a Soap Opera briefly. Because she resembles her 616 counterpart, MJ will sometimes catch the attention of paparazzi or obsessed fans - usually at the worst time.
Secret Identity
Although her identity as Iron Spider-Woman was public in Earth-702, her Mary Jane Watson identity is not publicly associated with Iron Spider-Woman here in Earth-616 at this time.
Spider-Man's Enemies
MJ's armor resembles one Spider-Man is known to have once worn which means she inherits his rogues gallery. Additionally, Many of Spider-Man's enemies know that Mary Jane Watson has associated with Peter Parker in the past, so she can't always enjoy the luxury of retreating into her civilian appearance to get a reprieve.
Mary Jane Watson
As Mary Jane Watson is a famous actress and model in Earth-616, anyone could recognize Mary Jane Watson-Parker (of Earth-702) as her because they look exactly the same. Some people may also know Mary Jane Watson as the ex-girlfriend of Peter Parker.
Iron Spider-Woman
Iron Spider-Woman is an unknown to Earth-616. Some may assume she is one of the previous Spider-Women who have been active in this world or they might mistake her for Spider-Man who once wore the Iron Spider armor himself? although if they get a good look at her figure this mistake is likely to not be long-lived.
If anyone cares, below are descriptions and images of MJ's wardrobe items.
Iron Spider Armor
A skin-tight, metallic red body outfit covers this woman of above average height from head to toe, doing nothing to conceal her curvaceous figure. Multiple golden highlights accent the outfit: angular "eye spots", vambraces, greaves, and a spider emblem emblazoned on her chest. The spider's legs wrap over her shoulders and around her waist in pairs, reaching towards a golden circle in the middle of her back where her mechanical spider-arms sprout when they are extended.
