- Born and raised on the Camp Verde Apache Reservation in Arizona, he is the youngest son of Neal and Maria Proudstar.
- Idolizing his older brother John Proudstar, James would follow in his brothers path of becoming a soldier/warrior, learning to fight from the Elders on the Reservation to better prepare himself for when he joined the service.
- Both brothers would develop mutant powers due to their mothers exposure to nuclear fallout from bomb testing, which would also lead to their mother being diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia by Dr. Martynec.
- John's reporter friend Michael Whitecloud informs the brothers that something is wrong with the testing and James stows away in the pickup to go investigate with his older brother. Infiltrating the clinic they discover that the tests had been falsified for nefarious purposes and the Doctor is a monster, literally. The three blow up the clinic after learning their mother was fine.
- John takes the name Thunderbird and joins the X-Men but dies soon after during his second mission and James vows vengeance against the X-Men and Xavier for his brothers death. After stealing his brothers body for a traditional Apache funeral pyre, James then joined the Hellions under Emma Frost as team leader for some time.
- James' hatred for Xavier and the X-Men is manipulated by the Hellfire Club and he joins their school for Mutants. He is offered a role in the Hellions and takes his brother John's name and costume to drive the shame home to the X-Men and New Mutants.
- His hatred for the X-Men doesn't diminish and he tries to lure the X-Men into a variety of traps to defeat them, luring them to where his brother had died to prove a point and use NORAD's defenses against them. Unfortunately he gets 'help' from other Hellions and things don't work out as he planned getting furious with them after innocents get put in harms way. Using the NORAD base against them he defeats several members of the X-Men but rather than leave them to die he drags them free as he had no desire to become a killer.
- With the X-Men defeated James rushed to confront and kill Xavier but finds he cannot and ultimately finds peace with Xavier and the X-Men but turns down an offer to join the other school, staying with the Hellions at the Massachusetts Academy.
- Later when the New Mutants would join the Academy for a time, he welcomed them without any hostility growing to become a good and honorable man. He even punished members of his own team for attacking members of the New Mutants.
- Taking care of his people and team was a priority for James as the leader of the Hellions, but he would come to view the New Mutants in the same light feeling responsible and protective of them as well even though they were on opposite sides of events on many occasions.
- Eventually James' desire for revenge against the X-Men would dissolve completely and he returned to the Camp Verde Reservation in Arizona. After a trip to New York, James found everyone in Camp Verde slaughtered, and evidence pointed towards the Hellfire Club. With a newfound desire for Revenge he joined X-Force and took the name Warpath, retiring his brother's name for good.
- With X-Force he hoped to be able to use his new team to get revenge on the Hellfire Club but before long the teams Headquarters was destroyed and he lead the team to Camp Verde, now abandoned, to use as a base of operations.
- After a misunderstanding lead to his team being captured by the X-Men he learned that another group was now attacking the Hellfire Club and had devastated it. With no way to take his revenge Warpath continued with the X-Force Team in order to have some direction.
- Feeling no Loyalty to the X-Men Warpath took what he could from the Mansion to help his team catch bad guys in the future even if it was a breach of trust.
- Eventually James would break from X-Force after learning that the Hellfire Club wasn't responsible for the death's of his family and people on the Reservation at Camp Verde. Once again losing his reason for revenge he decided he needed to find his own path, a new path in the world.
- Before James would leave the team, he would discover many things about his abilities, getting training from several mentors he would learn to fly, leap incredible distances, and that his senses were incredibly sharper than most other people in addition to his monstrous strength, amazing agility, and reflexes far above a normal person's.
- A reverse-mutagen was released all over the world and temporarily robbed all of X-Force of their abilities the team was shaken to it's core. Feeling vulnerable the team went to England and ended up working with the British Government to expose a Russian Conspiracy. To escape reprisals the team faked their deaths a few times but ended up coming out again when other mutants tried to take their teams name. After a legal battle, the damage had been done, and the original team disbanded.
- After a brief stint with a few corporations Warpath joined the X-Men finally putting his age-old dislike behind him completely and is gifted with a pair of Vibranium Combat Knives which he trains with extensively. With the X-Men he would travel to space after discovering a Shi'ar base and ship and there destroy many robots and fight many aliens from Shi'ar to Skrull.
- After a long trip home through which Warpath feels disconnected from the natural world he once more is thrown into the many conflicts that the X-Men become embroiled in including joining a more violent and brutal aspect of the X-Men, a revived X-Force, killing many in the process.
- James struggles with the violence and death he has been causing with X-Force and the loss of more friends, when at least on one occasion a life is sacrificed to protect him from gunfire… which he is impervious to.
- After so much death he finally leaves X-Force and returns home only to encounter a demon bear that holds the spiritual energy of his dead family and those of Camp Verde captive. His natural shamanic abilities are activated over the course of stopping the Demon Bear but he still mistrusts magic and doesn't pursue that path.
- More adventures ensue, traveling to the future and back, and James finds himself becoming more attached to those close to him and though he hates that he has become a killer, he discovers that he is willing to do so if it will save the life of another he is close to.
James Proudstar is easily taken by the need for revenge. As an Apache Warrior he believes in an eye for an eye and seeing justice served. Acts of violence upon his family or friends will be responded with in kind and then some. These feelings, this need for revenge, can become an all consuming thing for James to the point of near self-destruction.
James believes in honor and doing what's right no matter the cost. It's one of his most admirable traits and one that has helped him survive hardship that would have destroyed lesser individuals. When his word is given, it is given, and nothing will change that. When there is a choice between what is wrong, and what is right, James will do what is right as otherwise his honor would be tarnished.
James Proudstar has lost so many people in his life that he clings almost desperately to those who are important to him now. He will do practically anything out of loyalty to his friends, including killing, if it would save a friend or teammates life. It takes a lot for him to leave a team, instead suffering for months, or even years, before finally forcing himself to move on if doing so won't cause harm to those he leaves behind.
James doesn't know when to quit. He will fight even knowing he will lose if by doing so he can save others. If his death would save the lives of those worth saving, he would die. His determination is a combination of the natural Apache warrior spirit, his desire to make his life /mean/ something, and the knowledge that if he should die a good death he would be reunited with his brother John and the rest of his family who have been killed.
Due to his heightened senses James is used to receiving a lot of information at the same time and without it he becomes moody, abrasive, and suffers through other symptoms of psychological withdrawal. He needs to feel connected to the natural world, spending to much time in completely artifical environments, such as space ships or bomb shelters and places with hermetically sealed environments causes him to go on edge. If he were to somehow lose a sense it would be more crippling and unbalancing to him as well.
Growing up on the Reservation James was surrounded by the Apache warrior culture, or what was left of it. Idolizing his brother John, who joined the Marines, only enhanced this trait. Even without his mutant powers James is a skilled scout, hunter, and Apache Warrior and he embodies that spirit more literally than he is willing to accept. It troubles him somewhat how easily he can and will kill if the situation calls for it. There is blood on his hands and he doesn't like it, knowing all to well that the line between Warrior and Sadist can be very thin and he worries about what he is becoming. It's when he stops caring about the blood on his hands that he will have lost himself completely.
Being the second son of a true hero is a difficult thing to come to terms with. Especially when that hero has died trying to save so many people. It's a lot to live up to for sure but more than anything, James wants to surpass his brother. It's a hard thing to do when your friends and family know and remember the events surrounding that death. What James doesn't know is that he already has stepped beyond Thunderbird's shadow, surpassed him nearly every way, survived so much, done so much… but in a way he that challenge is what drives him even still to be a better man, a better hero and without that to define him… who can say where he'd end up.
James tends to wear his heart on his sleeve in a lot of ways. When he falls, he falls hard, and even if it's unrequited it's hard for him to let go. Since he has no family to return to he wants to build a future of his own but knows that it's not likely to happen due to being an X-Man. Even knowing that doesn't stop him from trying to find emotional connections to replace the ones torn from him. This can be used against him, or be a source of great endurance as he will go to Hell itself for the ones he loves.
James is motivated by the desire to prove himself a hero worthy to himself and to the ghosts of his family. He sees himself as a warrior, a soldier, protector, and a leader though the latter isn't something he feels he must be he will lead if he feels it's the proper thing to do for the situation. His greatest motivation however is a not so unconscious fear of losing those who are important to him. He has no desire to be alone and the X-Men are the only family he has left in the world.
Eventually James would like to settle down, have a family, help rebuild his tribe but he has obligations to his friends. He will continue to fight the good fight because he feels that is what a hero should do. It's what his brother would (and did) do. He wants to win the war for mutant kind so they can live in peace once and for all. Once that's done then there may be time for other things.
Warpath's senses are amplified to superhuman levels at all times. He can hear whispers from hundreds of feet away and see with detail for miles further than normal. In fact the curvature of the earth can be a limiting factor at ground level. Individual smells can be picked out and tracked if they are not disrupted in some fashion and his sense of touch is amplified as well, able to pick up tiny imperfections or individual threads of a silk shirt. He has these abilities active all the time and is used to them to the point that darkness does not hamper him in the slightest. Sensory overload powers however are even more effective against him because of this and can cause extreme pain.
Warpath is able to move faster than a human being can, he can run at approximately 100 MPH flat out and react to things traveling faster than humans can see. Such as bullets and other weapon attacks, reacting to the sound of the trigger being pulled or an energy build up, or spotting a change in stance such as preparing to absorb the kick of a firearm. His enhanced agility allows him to react to things his enhanced senses pick up making him amazingly agile, especially for a man his size able to do gymnastics that an Olympic Gold Medalist would be in awe of.
Warpath is superhumanly strong, able to lift up to 50 tons without really pushing it and peaking out at approximately 75 tons at times of great strain or importance. This allows him to smash through all but the hardest of materials and trade blows with other super strong individuals. Warpath gets stronger the more confident and focussed he is, when distracted or depressed he grows significantly weaker down to the 10 or 15 ton range.
Warpath can, and has in the past, performed at peak performance levels for up to 24 hours straight non-stop without tiring. He can run at a full sprint from coast to coast of North America without stopping. This endurance also allows him to recover more quickly from injury and exhaustion than normal though he does not regenerate so much as heal (With requisite scar tissue and such) faster than humanly possible. Broken bones heal in days, not weeks, and he'll still need stitches if it's a bad cut or he'll bleed out eventually.
Due to a combination of physique, increased muscle & bone density, and his superhuman strength & endurance Warpath is exceptionally hard to hurt. This applies mostly to kinetic impacts such as bullets, explosions, and brawling impacts from super-strong individuals. Even high caliber bullets at close range simply flatten on his skin and he has taken a shot from the likes of the Hulk and kept fighting though admittedly he can't take many of those. In essence he can take what he can dish out. This resistance also applies to energy attacks to a lesser degree and to an even lesser degree against cutting weapons. A human with a knife, not a problem, but someone like Beast would do more damage with his claws and teeth than with a punch or kick. He is also resistant to temperature extremes able to operate comfortably in the arctic, or a desert without protective gear but he still needs to breathe and cannot survive a vaccuum for very long without special gear.
Due to the shamanistic nature of the Apache, Warpath has inherited the ability to see and affect spirits and other such magical beings. He has the potential to learn to be a full shaman but dislikes magic and won't pursue that path if he can help it. He's already uncomfortable with what he already knows. This ability also allows him some resistance to magic and the ability to know a magical beings weakness(es).
Warpath can fly. He doesn't do it unless absolutely necessary however. His top speed is not very fast, perhaps 200 mph, but he is a clumsy flier due to lack of practice and not very agile when in the air… which is part of why he doesn't fight in the air unless he has no choice.
Given to him by Ororo and T'Challa (Black Panther) Warpath has a pair of large bowie knives that are custom designed and sized to fit his large size. These knives (practically short swords really) are made of 100% pure Vibranium and thus are about as indestructible as is humanly possible. They are also incredibly sharp, able to cut through just about anything like a hot knife through butter given the amount of force he can put behind them and the blades material. Anything but pure adamantium, vibranium, or adamantium-vibranium alloys and other uniquely durable objects (Mjolnir, Silver Surfer's Board, etc) are unable to resist these blades.
James Proudstar is a member of the X-Men, and has been for a long time through many iterations. He is able to use the facilities at the Mansion freely, and call upon other members of the team should the need arise. He also lives at the Mansion most of the time these days though doesn't teach the students all that often, subbing for others in hand to hand combat training, tracking, stealth, and mission planning from time to time.
To put it bluntly, James is a stud. He is physically impressive in ways most men cannot possibly be due to his size and physique. On top of that he has the noble features of the Apache Warrior and a natural stoicism that can be so very alluring. The long black hair, strong chin, and natural red-bronze skin doesn't hurt either. It would come as no surprise if he inspired many romance novel covers.
As the only surviving member of his particular branch of the Apache Tribe, James has complete control over the Camp Verde reservation in Arizona. There are several ranches, homes, and other resources available there at his discretion though he has sold off all the livestock and such. While many of the buildings are in disrepair due to lack of upkeep or are of poor quality to begin with there's plenty of room and nice living spaces available still.
Due to his tax exempt sales of livestock from the Camp Verde reservation James has a significant amount of money available to him. While not wealthy, he can easily live comfortably as long as he does not make any exhorbitant purchases.
Growing up on the Reservation gave James a lot of practical skills that are of little use to most modern people. He is an expert in tracking and stealth, able to live off the land easily, and is a competent survivalist. He knows how to ride and care for horses and how to avoid natural dangers. He's also competent at maintaining and using firearms of all types.
Learning how to fight is an important skill amongst Apache braves and there are few who can match Warpath's abilities in fisticuffs. He's had over a decade of training and many years of actual combat experience with the Hellions, X-Force, and the X-Men with which to hone is skills.
Ever since he received his Vibranium knives from Ororo and T'Challa he has trained constantly and intensively with the weapons. Already dangerous in a fight he has pushed himself to become a true Master with the knives. Given that Apache Warrior's /train/ Special Forces in knife combat his abilities with these weapons is almost without equal. This also includes throwing the knives in addition to melee combat.
While he is not a genius intellect or some sort of savant, James has been trained in the use of computers and other electronics while he was a Hellion and as a member of the other teams. He has also spent time with alien technology and space ships away from Earth. He is familiar with Kree, Skrull, and Shi'Ar technology and like most X-Men, can operate any common ground vehicle as well as fly the Blackbird.
Having natural superhuman agility is one thing, but Warpath has had years of training in how to use his agility to it's best advantage. He can perform acrobatics and gymnastics that would make Olympic athletes green with envy due to training, enhanced strength, and enhanced agility.
Warpath likes to plan ahead when given the opportunity. He makes it a point to know the building plans ahead of time if given the opportunity so as to know every means of ingress and egress. He also studies his opponents and learns not only his opponents weaknesses, but how to exploit them. This was grilled into him early on as Leader of the Hellions and has been honed by years of use.
James is fluent in Apache, English, and Spanish as all three languages were used throughout his childhood regularly. He is not particularly affluent at learning languages however and has only picked up bits and pieces of other languages through exposure during his adventures.
Warpath is downright athletic as well, running at up to 100 mph requires perfect form. Leaping tall buildings in a single bound requires not just a great physique but instinctive trajectory knowledge, and he can swim fast as well. Not as fast as he can run, but fast. In fact he has to swim fast, with his muscle and bone density he doesn't float.
James is a creature of heightened senses, and heightened emotional responses. He tends to bottle these emotions up, hiding them behind a stoic expression and posture but he /feels/ more than most people because he gets greater sensory input. Thus his emotions can be manipulated more easily via powers or just regular manipulations. These emotional responses can cause him to act without thinking, putting himself in harms way, or even killing to protect a friend or loved one. These emotions weigh heavily on him and can cause difficulties in some situations.
Warpath has been active for a long time as first a Hellion, and then X-Force, X-Corporation, and the X-Men. As such he has a huge laundry list of enemies including people who will kill hundreds, if not thousands, of innocents just to hurt him. That's not counting the general enemies of Mutants everywhere, enemies of the X-Men, or the enemies of team members.
If there's a fight going on, he wants to be in the thick of it. He will put himself in harms way at the drop of a hat and while he isn't a berserker, his belief in his own abilities is such that he sometimes doesn't think of the actions of others. This includes getting in the way of the attacks of other team members sometimes. This also makes down time incredibly difficult, James is a do'er and always wants to be doing something thanks to his boundless energy and endurance. Boredom is a killer.
James Proudstar stands out in a crowd. Any crowd. He is over seven feet tall and incredibly muscular with massive shoulders. This doesn't even take into account that he is quite obviously a Native American with distinctive skin tone and facial structure. When not purposefully hiding and being stealthy… he sticks out, and then some.
As a mutant Warpath is affected by all things which are indemnic to being a mutant. Power draining technologies, mutant ability manipulation, anti-mutant sentiments/hatred… being a Mutant isn't easy, especially when you always stick out in a crowd.
