Cowardly Lion
Wonder Man is a strong and stalwart member of the Avengers, able to clearly stand his ground against almost anything… except the things he's failed against, before. In his mind, if he failed at something, he doesn't want to be faced with it again.
Winning Smile
Simon has been, in many ways, a public face of the Avengers. He has been a movie star, stuntman, philanthropist and he makes no secret of his heroic identity with his public identity. As such, he's frequently a chipper and friendly individual, handsome and fun to be around.
The next time someone asks you if you're a god you say…
After having died at least twice, and with the realization that Simon isn't human anymore, but a being made of ionic energy, he's got a strange mindset. On one hand, he's almost a god of sorts. Above the simple, petty things that drive mankind like hunger or fatigue. But on the other hand, he's distanced from what he once was. He can't even father children, anymore. This can sometimes put him in a 'stranger in a strange land' sort of mindset.
I'm Just Like The Rest of You
Wonder Man. A long-standing Avenger. A man who faced down Korvac. A man who has beaten the mighty Thor. But he's a nice guy from New Jersey, and he's worked behind the scenes in movies as a stunt man, and he's even an admitted (and forgiven) criminal. He can do incredible, amazing things, but in the end, he's also just your everyday fella. He likes complex coffee and breakfast food, flying around in space, and seeing the Jersey Devils take on the Philadelphia Flyers.
Motivation
Many strange and varied things have happened in the world since Simon Williams became Wonder Man. The lastest event, few people even seem to remember. But the consequences are everywhere. But Simon's going to do as he always felt was right. Help the little guy. Fight for those who can't fight for themselves, or who are facing threats that seek to step on them just because they can. He's a very humble hero, and he intends to play that up, letting everyday people know that superheroes aren't that much different from them, after all.
Goals
With the recent occurrences and all-new, all-different friends and foes alike showing up, Simon intends to bring heroes together. Both young and old, new and established. Whether in the Avengers or in other, locally-based teams. Is he going to teach? Probably not. But support? Absolutely. He wants to be a friend to all, and one of the more important goals he's looking toward is reinstating the West Coast Avengers again. Beyond that… maybe television? A weekly talking-point show with other superheroes or TV personalities? Bring these larger-than-life figures a little down to earth for the people they save on a daily basis.
Ionic Physiology
Simon's entire body has to a certain extent been supplanted by an unknown substance during the "ionic ray" bombardment. He does not house blood in his body, just pure ionic energy. He is immune to disease and poison, nor does he need food, water, or oxygen. He is beyond the peak of human capability in physical feats. His agility, running speed, balance, reflexes and coordination are better than the finest human athlete. He also never tires, and does not require sleep. He's not entirely aware of it yet, but his ionic physiology is also capable of regenerating itself, from small wounds to even lost limbs. This is because he's not a purely organic being anymore, but an energy being. He doesn't even age. He is, for all intents and purposes, immortal.
Durability
Simon's body is much harder and far more resistant to physical injury than the bodily tissues of a normal human. Williams is highly resistant to penetration wounds, even from high-caliber shells to tremendous impact forces, such as falling from great heights or being struck by superhuman opponents. Williams is also resistant to extremes in temperature and can survive the vaccuum of space. For example, on the Mohns scale of hardness, Simon is a 9. He has taken blows from Thor and kept on fighting.
Strength
Williams is, hands-down, one of the strongest beings on Earth. He is listed as being in class 100+, and has taken on and defeated entities like Korvac, and even bested the mighty Thor. Even without the benefit of flight he can leap hundreds of feet just with the strength in his legs. He also has excellent control of his strength, able to hold a kitten in one hand and punch through a robot's chassis with the other. Certainly not the opposite!
Senses
Wonder Man has a level of superhuman hearing. He can hear better, farther, and with more clarity than a human, and is capable of filtering intense sound to avoid disorientation and aural damage. As well, his vision is superhuman; he is able to see into spectrums beyond visible light. He can see into energy spectrums, from infrared to ultraviolet, enabling him to see with perfect clarity in the dark.
Flight
Wonder Man can fly without visible means of support, though often propelled by a contrail of purple-blue ionic energy, up to the speed of sound in atmosphere. He has excellent maneuverability while flying, and rarely crashes.
Avengers
Wonder Man is one of the Avengers! What more needs to be said? He helps them, and they'll help him! This includes the use of their mansion, vehicles, training, laboratory and workshop facilities, business network, etc.
Business Holdings
Simon Williams is no longer the CEO of Williams Innovations, the company having gone public, but he is still a major shareholder of the company. He also has business deals in the television and film industry for the times he was an actor and stuntman. He also is the front runner for the non-profit organization called Second Chances, a charity to help victims of circumstance.
Handsome
You're so vain, I bet you think this song's about you. But in Simon's case, it's genuine. He is truly a handsome, charismatic and eye catching individual and it has landed him a better stroke of luck in the working world than your average fellow. He's been on television, film, a PR specialist for heroes, and even done minor political stints for the US government during certain initiatives. His smile can light up a thousand cameras.
Scientist
Williams graduated magna cum laude and earned his Ph.D in electrical engineering at an almost record-setting age. He's a gifted intellect and he can understand the ins and outs of machinery and how they're powered, how those internal workings function, and how best to make adjustments and fix them. He's not the best, but he could certainly be a player on that field if he put his mind to it.
Hollywood Contacts
In the years of being a stuntman/actor, Simon has established contacts within the industry. He even has his name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This does not increase his fame or notoriety, but it allows him to have an advantage when seeking work or entry into B-List parties.
Acting
Having started small-time, taken a few independent acting and improv courses, Simon has developed a steady career as an actor. He's apparently a natural talent for it, even though he may not have as much of a flair for the dramatic, being very predisposed to things like action films.
Unarmed Combat
Having been in the Avengers for a number of years, having received some training under Captain America himself. He's a skilled combatant, an expert even, but not a master in any one form of fighting.
Business
He minored in business in college and was forced to dive into the deep end when managing Williams Innovations. Since then, however, he's become his own manager and is quite adept at marketing himself as an enterprise. People love heroes. And the people who don't love heroes need to see that heroes are lovable. Simon's quite good at that.
Engineering
Having a doctorate in electrical engineering allows him to be able to work with equipment and how they work and how they're powered. He may not quite be a bomb technician, but he's able to certainly follow where wires go and where things get their power from.
Psyche
Wonder Man has died on multiple occasions. Such harrowing experiences conflict with the notion that he doesn't age and he's "effectively immortal." Having been dispersed across the cosmose as infite particles only to re-form after a time is hell on a mostly human mind. It doesn't help that, more than once, he's been used for evil ends.
Disruption
Yes, Wonder Man is nigh-invulnerable. He can take a hammer blow from Thor and keep fighting. But if something is capable of manipulating or disrupting his particular ionic energy signature, they can damage him severely, or who knows, maybe even disrupt him to the point of dissipating again.
Second Best
Everyone loves the Avengers. The invincible Iron Man, the mighty Thor, even the Incredible Hulk. Who's Wonder Man? Even though he's an internationally-famous, public face of the Avengers, for all the work he puts in… Simon is not an icon. He knows he has to live under that shadow. At least once he's even had to remind some people how he's single-handedly defeated the Avengers in the past.
Hands Full
You're the public face of the Avengers, and something big has happened and different Avengers are here. Avengers who aren't Avengers. People from other dimensions, alternate realities. People with different lives, experiences and outlooks. It's raising hell in the media, and Simon certainly has his hands full trying to maintain the positive outlook that people ought to have for the mighty heroes that defend them.
Energy Drain
Simon is especially vulnerable to persons or machines that drain energy. This is also applied to persons or machines that could manipulate his specific energy in ways to diminish his strength, overpower him, or modify his abilities in aberrant ways.
Over Zealous
In almost any combat situation, Simon will always attack the most powerful foe presented. He seems to have a sort of mortality/immortality complex, and should be on the front lines. Whether he feels he's invulnerable or doesn't deserve his multiple chances at life is up to debate, but more than once he's been a thorn in the team's side, charging in when the plans weren't ready.
Distinctive Feature
Wonder Man's body is composed of ionic energy and it shows. His eyes radiate the ionic energy in a bright red hue. They shine a bit brighter than a candle. He often wears sunglasses to conceal this trait. Sometimes he also gives off motes of purple, black, or blue energy. Typically this is during periods of heightened emotional stress or energy expenditure. Further, while being ionic may be his greatest strength… he's not an organic being anymore, and does not have internal organs. It's just as much a weakness for the Wonder Man.
Criminal History
It was only thanks to the charms of the Enchantress that Simon's sentence was never carried out. He was arrested for embezzling his own company's funds. He has since been absolved of this by the public after making a publicized admission and request for forgiveness, but the fact remains he's done what he's done. Further, his own brother is a known criminal - the dreaded Grim Reaper - and is a threat to Simon and his associates, both super-powered or otherwise.
Wonder Man's Wonderful Tale, part Won- I mean, One.
- Born in Paterson, New Jersey to Sanford and Martha Williams. Older brother to Eric. Sanford owned Williams Innovations, an industry factory that produced a multitude of things, including weapons and munitions for the US government.
- Eric was an athlete, getting into fights and crime early. Simon was the more studious brother, though he got in fights as well to stick up for Eric. College would split them, Simon studying locally while Eric moved to Las Vegas. Simon earned his PhD in near-record time, graduating magna cum laude in his field of electrical engineering. Through this period of growing up, though, Sanford blamed Howard Stark and Stark technologies for keeping him behind in his business.
- At twenty-two, Simon's father Sanford died, leaving the company to him. Simon only minored in business, so he was not an experienced CEO. With all this pressure and the lack of ability to really pursue his field, Williams Innovations floundered. Simon asked Eric for help, who was now associated with the Maggia crime family. Needless to say, Simon was a good boy, and he was bad at crime. He was caught embezzling funds in a scheme cooked up by his brother.
- Facing incarceration he was approached by an associate of Baron Zemo. She paid his bail and arranged a meeting. Simon agreed to undergo tests for Zemo in thanks, and Zemo's fanaticism against Stark, the Avengers, and Iron man in particular sparked a fire in Simon, and he readily agreed for the treatment.
- Simon was given ionic ray bombardment treatments, stymied only by Zemo's serum. Simon, now labeled Wonder Man, single-handedly fought and defeated the Avengers. But he soon realized he was fighting on the wrong side, and turned against Baron Zemo, saving the Avengers before his apparent death.
Wonder Man's Terrific Tale, Part Two!
- In truth he was not dead, but only in a coma, undergoing a strange new process that slowly transformed his body into something amazing and new. Soon he was composed of pure ionic energy… but was still in stasis. He was found by his brother, who became the villain the Grim Reaper, who sought to resurrect him for his own wicked ends. He failed.
- However, it was after an attack by another villain called the Living Laser, that Simon was able to come to his senses once again. Returned to apparent life, living, and the pursuit of happiness, he readily joined the Avengers. But he had just come back from the dead, and it was a harrowing experience.
- He worked for a time with the Avengers, adding his technological expertise and his amazing abilities as an asset for the team. It really came in handy during a battle against the near-omnipotent Korvac, but the Avengers came out on top and Simon was able to live up to his full fury and power.
- Years passed and he was a stalwart, though psychologically damaged member of the team. Unsure of what to do with himself, he readily accepted going along to start the West Coast Avengers team in California, where he thought to make a career as a stunt man. His natural charm, charisma, and attractiveness had him quickly rise to stardom. But he felt that Hollywood was too disingenuine for him, so he went back to super-heroing full time after a remarkable win against Graviton.
- Working as a stunt man in LA, and as a hero with the Avengers, Simon's confidence finally began to really soar in earnest. Until an intergalactic conflict when he was hit by a Kree ion cannon, and was apparently killed. But… he wasn't. His matter was simply dispersed into ionic particles. As time went on, it was theorized that it was the Scarlet Witch that had brought him together, occasionally reappearing. Until finally Wanda was able to manipulate the chaotic enegies she could touch, and Simon was whole again.
- Having taken another psychological blow, Simon sought to help others in a more grassroots way, starting a non-profit called Second Chances, for those who were overwhelmed by forces beyond their control.
- Simon was one of the public faces of the pro-registration side of things during the Superhuman Registration Act fiasco. He was one of the first to sign up, and he was assigned with Ms. Marvel at the time. A publicity stunt suggested the two should have an intimate relationship, but this seemed to be only for show, as it was rapidly forgotten.
- Most recently, after the events of the Civil War and the other ensuing conflicts, Simon has found himself sort of on the fringe of the Avengers. Still a hardy member, seeing so much inter-hero conflict has made him question what may be right for the world.
However, Simon was NOT from the typical 616 reality. He was from dimension 614. A reality that was almost a complete carbon copy of 616, except… there was no ionic leakage. There was no madness. There was no disillusionment with what the Avengers did. There were no Revengers. Simon was a strong and brave member of the Avengers when they came about again after the end of Osborn's Dark Reign. He had no memory of the Secret Wars. As far as he knows, things are a little wonky. Something big happened, and he's just trying to help calm things down in the thick of it. Here he is in this universe, unknowing that he's in another universe altogether!
