Nate Grey wasn't born. He was grown. An evil scientist named Sinister took samples from two of the most powerful mutants known in his reality and combined them to create a genetically engineered mutant of incalculable power. Dubbed "X-Man", the entity created was intended to be Sinister's weapon against Apocalypse. The ancient Egyptian had conquered their world and Sinister had no interest in merely being a pawn or a servant. In X-man, he hoped to have a horseman of his own, a being capable of challenging Apocalypse's servants and giving Sinister leverage in his schemes for power.
Before Sinister's programming could be activated, however, Nate was stolen, freed from his development chamber. A blank slate, he followed the man who was leading him out, unsure of why, until he was freed and let out into the world.
Nate eventually fell in with a group of mutant vagabonds and wanderers, trying to stay out of the grip of Apocalypse and out of the constant conflict. Just wanting to survive. Nate was taken in there, without real understanding of his origins or abilities. When he used his powers to help a girl in trouble, however, he alerted Apocalypse's forces of his existence.
Forced to defend himself, he found himself in battle, ultimately to the fortress of Apocalypse himself. There, Nate, as he'd come to call himself, encountered Jean Grey and Scott Summers - the two mutants from who his DNA was drawn. The connection, however, was brief and Nate found himself rocked in battle with Apocalypse's own son. The two eventually crashed into a shard of the M'kaan crystal of that dimension, shattering it and sending them both spinning off into other dimensions.
Since his arrival in this reality, Nate has…wandered. A combination of physical trauma and dimensional travel have robbed him of most of his personal memories, leaving him knowing little except his name. Even the few flashes of memory he has don't really resemble the world he finds. He's eventually made his way to New York, unsure of his place in the world, angry, alone and alienated. Perhaps he'll find friends. Perhaps not. Only time will tell.
Nate Grey doesn't really understand what's become of him. The memories of his own world are broken. He's confused, unsure of what to make of the world around him, and surrounded by strangers. Even when he does encounter anyone he's met, it's likely to be a much different version of them than he might be able to piece together from his shattered history. This can make him alternatively angry or vulnerable, with an undercurrent of fear beneath it all.
Nate inherited a quick temper. He's quick to be roused, not afraid of a fight and not always particularly rational about it. He doesn't have the life experience to put things in context, so his anger can be extremely intense and wrongly directed at times.
Perhaps as a result of his psionic abilities, Nate just feels everything intensely. He swings around emotionally in fairly wide swathes, going from joyous to sorrowful to enraged in sequence, sometimes over even minor provocations. He has the highest emotional highs, but also the lowest lows and not much ability to control it.
Because of his intense emotions, Nate can be very raw and vulnerable, for those capable of getting past his defenses and anger. He's a young man who's never really had anyone who cared about him, anyone who's seen him as anyone other than a weapon to be used. When someone does earn his trust, they will find him to be incredibly loyal and fierce - but they will also have to deal with the very vulnerable young man underneath that armor.
To understand himself and the world into which he's fallen. To not feel so lost all the time.
To find friend and allies to help him understand his powers and give him a place to belong. To find a way to use his powers to help people and make this world better (although it seems pretty nice compared to where he came from).
Nate Grey possesses incredible telepathic abilities enabling him to perform a variety of feats. He can communicate mind to mind, even setting up networks for multiple people to communicate, even across hundreds of miles. He can seize control of the thoughts of others, allow him to control them. He can probe memories and alter them as he sees fit. He can unleash potent blasts of psychic energy capable of knocking an ordinary person unconscious, freezing them in place, or simply creating surges of intense psychic pain. He can create realistic psychic illusions capable of fulling all five senses by immersing a person totally within the mindscape of his creation. And he's capable of journeying into the astral plane, leaving his physical body behind to travel into that realm between worlds.
He has all of these abilities, but, at this point in his development, they are largely crude instruments. His lack of experience and training mean that he has far more raw power than he does control or skill. More subtle or nuanced uses of his capabilities are simply beyond him at this point. He makes mistakes, overestimates his powers (or underestimates them, just as often) and is something like a child suddenly gifted with vast superhuman strength - except his strength is mental rather than physical.
Nate has the ability to manipulate the physical world with the power of his mind. This allows him to fly at speeds of up to sixty miles per hour, to surround himself (and others) with a protective force field and to simulate superhuman strength with the power of his mind. He can lift weights of extraordinary size, up to sixty tons on average before the strain starts to get too much. The longer he lifts such weights, though, the more strain it will begin to have upon him.
Again, his lack of experience and training plays a part. At current, he can manipulate things very directly but doesn't have the fine control necessary to do more subtle things (like pick locks or assemble puzzles) - he's more brute force than anything. He also doesn't always know his own psychic strength, causing him to break or mishandle things that he's trying to handle more gently.
Possibly as a side effect of his immense psychic powers, Nate has an inherent charisma and likability. People find themselves drawn to him, wanting to help him and cutting him breaks they might not normally cut someone. Obviously, this doesn't help much with people who already mean him hide, but it means that he tends to get treated more like a lost puppy than an invader when he meets new people or tries to make friends.
Nate's largely been on his own, living by his wits and his own means. While powers help, he nonetheless tries not to over-rely on them. He's good at finding food and shelter, getting water and generally taking care of himself even without a conventional home. He's comfortable in nature and often prefers it to being around too many people. He's a decent woodsman and would be a passable boy scout, if he were that young.
From his psychic contact with others and attempting to learn what he can, Nate has absorbed bits and pieces of the world. None of them make a coherent whole. But he has little bits of knowledge in mechanics, pop culture, music, crafts, a wide variety of skills. None of these are particularly potent or world-threatening. He might suddenly discover that he knows how to solve a Rubik's cube or figure out how to diagnose a transmission. He might know all the lyrics to the songs of Phil Collins without even having a clear idea who Phil Collins is. The problem is, these skills just kind of stir up from his subconscious when prompted. He doesn't know they're there or how to search for them, he's just plucked them from the ether and nestled them deep inside his psyche. They can't be relied upon, but they can create for interesting moments.
Put simply, Nate is a being still in the rough. He's unformed, unmolded, untrained and a bit of a rogue element. He simply is still figuring his powers out which, given the immense level of his psychic abilities, can make him very dangerous and not always in the way he'd like. He can't perform some of the more subtle feats that some others with similar abilities have, for all his incredible power.
While physically a young adult, Nate has only been out of the lab in which he was grown for a relatively short time - a few months or so. While a quick learner and pretty smart, he simply doesn't have very much in the way of skills or life experience. He's got a lot of mistakes to make and he'll probably get around to all of them in time.
Nate's telepathic abilities will only work on those with conventional minds. Robots, aliens with non-human brain patterns, spirits and animals will simply be immune to such things. In addition, those with trained mental resistance or psychic abilities of their own may possess an ability to resist him to one degree or another.
Unknown to date, his DNA has been designed to give him a limited shelf-life. In a few years, his body will begin to break down and he'll face certain death unless a treatment or cure is found. If he were to be artificially aged or affected by time, this effect could be activated prematurely (or could be done so by someone with sufficient ability in genetic manipulation/science).
Put simply, the Summers-Grey DNA that infuses him comes with a legacy of trouble. Those who share his DNA have been routinely targetted for experimentation, conspiracy, cosmic manipulation and death. While there's much to be proud of in the legacy, there's also a great deal of tragedy and Nate will surely get his share.
Nate isn't from this world and is a newcomer to it. He doesn't have ties to this place or the usual resources to call on. Many things will be unfamiliar to him, especially because he's from a relatively (literally) post-Apocalyptic world.
Total unknown, newbie to this dimensional address.
