Imagine if you will, a normal suburb in Illinois. A place known as Deerfield, but to most teenagers growing up, it could be considered 'dulls field'. Still - there lived a brilliant young girl by the name of Katherine Pryde, or Kitty to her family and what friends she had in school. She was a well-liked youth, enjoying everything under the sun, from ice cream sundaes to /especially/ dancing. From the moment she could wobble she wanted to dance, and her parents were only too willing to put her in the dance classes - teaching her patience, balance, and grace. Her father, Carmen, was a banker and her mothe, Thersa an increasingly successful doctor and as young Kitty grew older, she came to accept and like her alone time, for her parents were not normally around.
Life would have gone on just as normal as you please, except for the fact, Kitty began having incredible headaches. It started soon after her thirteenth birthday, and it continued day in and day out affecting school courses, dancing, and her everyday life. On a particularly fierce day, when she swore she was going to die, the headache was so bad.. closing her eyes Kitty just wanted to make it stop, to stop the pounding in her head - thing was, after she opened her eyes not only had the headache passed, but she was no longer in her room, but on the floor /below/.
Startled and scared, Kitty didn't have much to say to the freaky light blonde haired woman that had come to visit from some place called the Massachusetts Academy. Whatever. No, Kitty was pretty mum about the entire incident. Not quite so mum, however, to not bond instantly with the next group of people that arrived. Thus fate would take a hand in delivering young Pryde to an entirely new world itself. You see, Kitty would meet up with Professor Charles Xavier and his X-Men; who would get captured by the Hellfire Club, leaving Kitty to be instrumental in leading the other X-Men to their location, proving that even untrained and untried she was a perfect candidate for the X-Men. (And proved just how important she would be later on, of course.)
Kitty wouldn't join the X-Men until after they lose one of their own, yet afterwards Kitty would gained a codename (Sprite), and maintain a long standing position on the team.
So Sprite, as Kitty called herself, had a unique manner in which she did things. For example; her first time through the danger room, Kitty crossed every single trap with her eyes closed. This would have been quite epic, if an alternate future self hadn't traded places with her! Still, if it wasn't for Kitty's time and dimensional traveling, the X-Men might never have stopped a very important senator from getting assassinated! Thankfully. They did stop it, and Kitty's mind was returned to the right place and time. (In the future she would also connect for the first time with a young Rachel Grey-Summers, who would eventually become one of Kitty's dearest and truest friends.)
It was after that incident that Kitty really started to bond with her other teammates, to the point of crushing really badly on Piotr Raspution aka Colossus. (Not that it ended well, as that particular individual had a thing for dead alien women.)
And more adventures happened to Kitty and the X-Men, for a time they went adventuring off into space and dealt with a really bad species known as the Brood. It got so bad, Kitty even pulled the 'if this is our last night together, I don't want to die a virgin' line on her crushing object of desire. The crush, wisely, turned her down, but it has to be said, Kitty totally pulled that line.
Returning to Earth (and after cleansing Xavier from the Brood Queen), Kitty would find that a young team of Mutants had been brought together. This was not so cool, as she suddenly didn't feel so special anymore. Things got even worse when Xavier punted her down to the 'X-Babies', and the only thing that stopped Kitty from remaining a 'New' Mutant, was an incident where she had to prove, once again, that she was a capable and confident young woman. (It also brought about the introduction of her loyal dragon friend, Lockheed.)
When Kitty's father got into trouble with Japanese Mafia, Kitty rushed to his aid alone. Wolverine saved her from a demonic figure known as Ogun, and took it upon himself to start training Kitty to be a better fighter from that point on. At the end of her Ninja styled training she took on the name Shadowcat.
And time continued to pass, at one point, the young sister of Kitty's crush was abducted by a horrific demon from a place known as Limbo!! Kitty did her best to try and pull the girl back into their own reality, but the girl slipped from Kitty's fingers for but a second, and when Kitty finally managed to re-grasp that hand and pull her back through, the girl was no longer a child, but a teenager right at Kitty's age! That girl would become Kitty's most dear and best of friends, and though the term was never quite coined back then, 'BFF' was certainly the phrase that would be used.
The girl, Illyana, would eventually join up with the young class of mutants, while Kitty continued adventuring with the X-Men. At least until the day when Kitty was horrifically hurt in the slaughter of innocent lives in the tunnels below New York and sent off to the UK to recover. Kitty's abilities where reversed, where she was always able to phase with a thought, the damage done to her made it so she had to focus to remain solid. It was a pretty dire situation, though it did lead Kitty to help form the team Excalibur!
In America the X-Men 'die', (though they really head over to Australia and conveniently forget that Kitty might have liked to know they were alive). As there is nothing left for Kitty in America, she and those with her decide to make Excalibur. For a very, very long time Kitty remains with the team. New members are added, some others are lost, she goes dimensional hopping, and ends up in a school from heck itself.
At least Kitty has two of her dearest friends with her, Kurt and Rachel, for sadly at some point during all of her time in Excalibur, New York is over run with demons and at the end of it all, Illyana is de-aged and returns to Russia. Though Kitty makes certain to write to her every day!
Then, Kitty loses Rachel as well, as the red-head changes places in the time line with Brian. So what does Kitty do after that? She hooks up with a Brit named Pete Wisdom. She totally should have known that guys with the name 'Pete' or 'Peter' are simply not good for her, but she crushed hard and had a relationship that ended badly. So badly in fact that after Piotr and Pete fought and Kurt was kidnapped, Kitty skipped out on Excalibur and returned to New York.
Returning to the fold for a little while left Kitty feeling like she needed a major break, else she'd have a breakdown. So many of those she dearly loved where lost now. So Kitty enrolled in a Chicago university and tried to have a normal life. Then. Her father died in a sentinel attack, and Kitty completely lost it. So much so, she was given a shrink. Her own personal shrink.
When Stryker returned to the scene, Ororo sought Kitty's assistance with him as well as this strange individual that had his own personal telepath. That telepath happened to be Kitty's very dearest friend Rachel. Helping Rachel break free from the control placed over her, at least Kitty had one close friend back, and was once again on a team.
She remained on the team lead by Emma and Scott, but had a lot of really bad stuff happened to her, including to being phased into a bullet. A bullet. And there she was believed to be dead for a long time.
So eventually Kitty is returned to earth by none other than Magneto himself - who almost died doing it. Kitty owes the guy a ton. Trouble was, Kitty was unable to speak, unable to go solid! It took some doing, in fact, she had to die and be resurrected, but she was soon able to become solid again. So she immediately shacked up with her first crush, who eventually would make a terrible decision and Kitty dumped him like a hot potato.
A big X-Schism soon happened, and Kitty became the headmistress of the Jean Grey School, helping to mold young minds in the proper way. Though really, does anything ever truly stay quiet?
A group of time traveling mutants - who happened to be the original X-Men - were placed in Kitty's care. Meanwhile Kitty made a lot of really bad crushing decisions, and broke free of them just as fast. Eventually, she would also once again become 'BFFs' with Illyana.
During a point when the Shi'ar once again stick their nose into the X-Men's business, Kitty meets this Star-Lord fellow named Peter Quill. He and the other Guardians help the X-Men free the student the Shi'Ar kidnap. Afterwards, he gives Kitty a device to holo call him and they begin the single most long distance relationship ever.
The dates don't go so well, naturally Kitty is totally not wanting to get into a relationship with another guy named Peter, nor does she want to put up with any childish nonsense. When Peter's kidnapped, however, Kitty steals one of Stark's space ships and goes to his rescue.
It turns out, there's this strange device called the Black Vortex that everyone is after - as it gives a person phenomenal cosmic powers! Everyone wants it, everyone that is, except Kitty. And who ends up with it? Kitty. Who isn't corrupted in the least by it. Not long afterwards Peter proposes to Kitty and she accepts.
Now, now Kitty's managed to rid herself of the cosmic Black Vortex and has returned to Earth while Peter deals with his own woes.
The one aspect to her personality that drives her the most is her compassion and passion for her friends, her goals, herself, and anything that fall in between. She has a great deal of understanding and feeling for the suffering of others, and will act upon that feeling, in any way to stop that suffering. Whether it is a kind word, or a gentle hug, or to rescue them from danger, Kitty will do anything to keep them from harm. She has a great deal of compassion for her friends, she cares greatly for everyone, but certain people, she would go to even greater lengths to keep them safe, and happy. She's been known to create a mini-cerebro, dress up in a friend's uniform, and walk the streets of London, trying to get warwolves to follow her, rather than her friend.
As well as her compassion for her friends, she has a great deal of feeling for her own goals, feelings, and ideals. She will not hesitate to speak out, and express herself. She will not back down when she feels it's right, she will voice her concerns, her emotions, her thoughts, nothing will change her mind when she knows she is correct. At times she can speak out, so eloquently, so beautifully, that her words and emotions will do more good, than physically standing up for the views.
Every so often, Kitty has days she calls her 'outsider moods'. These days are when she sits in quiet contemplation, wanting to be left, simply alone. It is during these days that she lets her mind wander over the events that have occurred in her life. The changes that have been made, the experiences she has shared, and the events which happened to change her own course of history, or those of others. They do not happen too often, only a few times in a year, as her mood shifts towards a more thoughtful introspection.
Kitty is always willing to stand up for herself and those that need her or those that cannot stand up for themselves. She certainly knows fear, but when she needs to - she can push this aside and act despite the odds against her. She has the courage to do what she believes is right, regardless of the risks involved.
Kitty is a very easy-going and upbeat individual who enjoys having a good time with her family and friends. Laughter has always been an essential part of Kitty's build and make-up, teasing, having fun, taking each day as they come, Kitty's smile is far more prominent than a scowl.
Kitty is an individual who is driven by her compassion, and is motivated by her heart. Her strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, also, motivates her very being. In truth, Kitty would do anything for her friends and family, she would kill if the situation was dire enough, she would willing sacrifice her life, or her happiness, for her family, friends, and the X-Men. The strong sense of goodness, kindness, hope and life that exists within Kitty's very core will always be all the motivation that she needs to be the hero that she is.
As Kitty no longer needs to be the teacher or the headmistress, her life is an empty book before her. She can go in any direction she desires. Her goals in life are a lot different, now, than they were but a few short months ago. What direction will she take? Kitty has had a taste for adventure again, the thrill of being out in the field, helping where she can, doing what she can. Her goals are going to be much more focused around the X-Men, being an adventurer and farther away from the teacher and stuffy headmistress she was before.
At times, Kitty can be very impulsive, and act truly without thinking of the consequences. She relies too heavily upon her being 'untouchable', the 'ghost', someone that cannot be harmed by most physical means. On rare occasions, she'll even do things irrationally, or go against orders to ensure the safety of those she cares about. She will act on instinct, and go back into danger, in order to 'help', 'rescue' or 'save' those that could be in harm. On the whole, its only during times when her emotions over-ride her great deal of common sense, when those she cares about are in danger, or threatened.
Once Kitty has made that connection to someone she is not only protective of them but very loyal in her friendship to them. She would never intentionally do anything that might hurt her friends and family. She is honest, almost to a fault, certainly she does not like to lie, or twist the facts. She's done so in the past, but has hated herself for it.
Kitty has the ability to make herself intangible at will in a process that she calls 'phasing.' She is able to control the density of her own body from a range of her solid normal state to one lighter than air and then passing her atoms through the spaces of atoms in other things to travel through it. Kitty is temporarily merged with the thing(s) through which she is passing but neither is permanently affected by her doing so as she passes through it without harm to herself or the solid thing or person. While this is her power that she controls consciously it has also become a reflex action for her that goes off instantly at any sign of danger like if she like if she hears a gunshot or is about to be punched, she will phase herself intangible to avoid harm.
When phased Kitty is able to pass through things and things can pass through her harmlessly such as people, solid projectiles and even energy beams or laser shots without any damage or affect on her. However Kitty is still able to be affected by psionic or magical attacks even when phased and can still be detected by scanning devices, psionic probes and can be seen as she just appears wispy and ghost-like as she is still very much there just phased. When traveling through something or someone Kitty passes through it at the same speed at which she enters and while she cannot breathe while inside something she can only travel through or remain inside it as long as she can hold her breath.
Her phasing causes her little or no strain and is able to do it freely and easily without it tiring her out in the least. Kitty has also mastered her phasing enough to phase certain parts of her with great concentration like when she is fighting an opponent and he throws a punch at her head she can phase her head but still hit solid with her hands.
Kitty can also phase other people when she makes physical contact with them and allow them the same sort of abilities that she receives from her own phasing, up to three or four at the most at a time. To remain phased to the degree of which Kitty controls they must remain in physical contact and should that be broken then the person would instantly become solid once again. The same restrictions that apply to Kitty when phased would apply to the people that are phased with her.
Through lots of practice Kitty has been able to control her phasing to a degree to be able to go lighter than air. Then carefully making herself more solid and less solid she can float upwards though the air using the change in her density to move side-to-side in it to literally walk on air. This is like a kind of flight but she can only move as fast as she can walk or run on the ground normally when solid but the air walking is completely silent making it good to sneak up on people or going from one floor to another above without using the stairs.
While Kitty can pass through any solid or some forms of energy and even people she has uncontrollable effects on any electrical system she may pass through either intentionally or unintentionally. Her phasing disrupts the flow of electrons within the circuit sometimes simply shutting the system down or sometimes overloading it and completely frying the system. Kitty has no control over the affects she has though she can chose to use this offensively if she wants to harm some computer or machine.
Kitty has been a member of the X-Men, or other groups associated with them, since she was thirteen years old. They are her family, her former students, her friends, her teammates. She has father figures, mother figures, best friends, and even former lovers within them. She will always have a place to stay, a warm meal, and people that care about her. She is an X-Man, and very proud of that fact.
Kitty is one to make friends easily enough, but true, loyal, absolute best buds forever? Those are given to a precious few. Illyana and Rachel are the two that Kitty has relied on, remained loyal to, and considers her 'bffs'. They are her sisters in heart, her dearest of friends, the people she tells her inner most secrets to, and she feels comfortable enough to bare her soul to. She would go to the ends of the earth for them, just as she knows the same can be said of them for her.
Across the pond, Kitty has other former teammates and friends that she can rely upon if the need is great enough. While Excalibur no longer exists as it use to, those individuals within it are still close friends that Kitty keeps up with. Or at least, she keeps up with most of them.
Former headmistress of the Jean Grey school, former Professor K of a smaller class of students, Kitty has not only strong ties with the X-Men, but the school as well. While she is still debating on whether or not she wishes to continue as a teacher, or prefers to be an adventurer, Kitty still has access to all that the Xavier Institute has to offer.
A friend, a loyal companion, Lockheed the dragon is much more than a pet to Kitty. Lockheed is Kitty's personal bodyguard, her sidekick in battle, her confident, her friend. The small, purple, alien has been with Kitty since she was fourteen years old, and has only left her for a very short time. (Like when Kitty was phased into a damn bullet.) Lockheed will always be with Kitty, he will always look out for Kitty, just as she will always be there for him.
Kitty has been trained by not only the X-Men, in the different forms of self-defense and combat, but by Wolverine in many forms of Martial arts. During her sojourn to Japan, her entire life was erased by an evil being, she was raised in his likeness, and taught from 'birth' countless forms of Martial arts. After being 'rescued' from his influence by Logan, the implanted memories were erased, though her passion to learn all she could was not. Afterwards, Logan continued to teach Kitty, increasing her studies, and teaching her to become, like she so proudly states 'a mutant ninja'. This includes fighting with sticks, (the art called 'Budo'), the Jewish art used by Israel's 'Mossad', or secret police, sword fighting, hand to hand combat, Karate, the skills of a Ninja, and other forms with which to not only be on the defense, but offense. She is quite skilled in her Ninja abilities, having the knowledge to train even her team-mates in the skills that Wolverine taught her. She's very agile, and limber, having a natural form to make combat easy, her abilities in gymnastics further her Martial Arts.
Kitty has been hailed as a goddess of computers. In the past, along with her former friend, Doug Ramsey, she was able to hack into high level government databases. She has also been able to master a Shi'ar clothing replicator in mere moments. Be it of this Earth or from beyond it Kitty is able spend a few moments alone with almost any computer and figure it out if not improve upon it. There is little as far as electronics, computers, or hacking that she cannot do.
This gift also extends to most electronic devices as well as computers as she spends most of her free time ripping apart such things to see how they work. She's been known to take apart Cerebro and put it back together in even an more advanced way that the Professor had made as well as fiddle with the bizarre and futuristic Widget (one possible future self) with some degree of success. Give Kitty a monkey wrench and a couple of hours and she can figure out at least the basics of almost any Earthy (or even Alien) electrical device inside and out.
During her time with the X-Men, Kitty was required to learn about the Danger Room. She has the ability to run any Danger Room Scenerio, run the computer, as well as having knowledge about the technology that runs it. She is fully able to use the Danger Room, without anyone assisting her.
While most would not agree with her fashion tastes, Kitty has been known to be a colorful person when it came to developing a new outfit. These outfits, sometimes, would come in a flurry of weekly designs, as she changed her costumes, and her look, with each colorful mood she entered. While she has outgrown that point in time, sort of, she has a creative edge and likes to design new things when she can - be it from personal web pages to Danger Room training sessions. Her taste in clothing is still very much Kitty, and as a result, it holds a unique and colorful taste to it.
Kitty has always been advanced for her age. Going to specialized schooling during her pre-teenage years, and beyond, even before the X-Men she held a unique brilliance to her. Upon joining with the X-Men, she continued her education, and has the training of one that has gone through a specialized College. This is including to Mathematics, English, Science, Chemistry, History, Geography, Computers, Electronics, and other courses that were taught to her, during her stay with the X-Men.
Kitty has also had time at a University studying computer science, and has a few courses under her belt.
An important skill, due to the dangers that could occur during any situation, Kitty has a good deal of knowledge with First Aid, and nursing skills. Her knowledge includes the ability to run the technology in the Infirmary, as well as the basic skills of stabilizing a person, setting a broken bone, and other important First Aid and beginning Nursing skills.
Graceful and light on her feet, Kitty is a gifted dancer and gymnast. She loves to dance, though it has been a long time since she has stepped foot in a dance studio. She's nimble, athletic, agile, and quick - enabling her to know how to twist and turn her body to perform not only many different dance styles, but easily tumble across the floor like an Olympic Gymnast.
Kitty has a brilliant mind, nearing genius level in her abilities. She's able to learn and understand from her experiences, as well as being able to retain that knowledge. She has a great mental capacity and inventive ability, especially within the field of electronics and computers. She has a cool composure and calm under fire training, from not only the X-Men, but with the team of super powered beings known as Excalibur. She's able to think and act quickly during any situation she finds herself in. She's creative and has an active imagination, being able to express herself eloquently, with great feeling and emotion.
During Kitty's duration with the X-Men, she has been trained in a number of languages, enabling her to speak fluently with her fellow team-mates; Russian because of Illyana and Peter, German due to Kurt, Japanese with Logan, and Shi'Ar due to her trip into space. Kitty is able to speak fluent Japanese, (Thanks to Xavier's telepathic powers) German and Russian. The Shi'Ar language was, also, taught to her by Professor Xavier's psionic powers, thus she knows how to fluently understand and speak that language as well. Finally, because of her religion, she has also learned important phrases and prayers in the Jewish native language of Hebrew. She is not able to speak fluent Hebrew, though she can understand bits and pieces of it, and knows the prayers and phrases from her Jewish background.
From the day she started out with the X-Men, Kitty has been given an education in, nearly, every field, from the basics of literature, to the complex formulas in physics. Her education also included the ability to fly a plane, whether it was a commercial jet airline, or the Blackbird, Kitty has been trained and is a knowledgeable pilot. She is able to take off, land, fly, and use all forms of airships, from the more complex (Blackbird, commercial jets), to the small bi-planes. She can even fly a space ship!
Kitty is a very imaginative individual who enjoys thinking up wild and wonderful stories to tell. She has a very fantastic imagination, and isn't shy in weaving stories for those who would listen.
In going along with her ability to express herself through prose and story telling, Kitty is also a fantastic public speaker. She talks from the heart, with poise, compassion and a strong voice filled with conviction. It isn't so much a soapbox style of speaking, but a way and manner in which Kitty conducts herself, able to express everything that she wishes with a quiet, passionate, and quite convincing manner.
Kitty is near sighted, or she can not see things far away. She must wear glasses in order to fix this problem. In the field, Kitty must wear contacts, or her vision of things is blurred.
Kitty's greatest fear is to once again become an intangible ghost. This fear occasionally grates at her conscious, and works itself into a disadvantage when it comes to situations that may see her threatened in that manner. She has had it happen too often, and as a result, is occasionally plagued by nightmares. While Kitty has buried the time she was phased into a bullet, that, too, still plagues her nights and fears.
Occasionally, Kitty is possessed with a bad temper, one to get into terrible mood swings, where nothing and no one can get her out of it. Most of the time, its due to outside influences, tired, frustrated, upset, fearful, something that builds up inside her, until she releases it. Most of the time this 'release' is in the form of a outlandish display of emotion, or anger. She will bite out at anyone, friend, foe, and family alike, then feel some measure of guilt about it. These moods are far and between, never coming to the surface too often, normally only seen during times of great stress, or during situations that are out of her control.
While phasing, Kitty must be able to breathe normally. If she goes through a solid object, she can only pass through said object for as long as she's able to hold her breath. If she loses consciousness while phased inside of a solid object, she will become solid and merge with the object (most likely resulting in some major damage to death.)
Kitty is also still very much vulnerable to mystical attacks while phased. Mystical abilities interact with Kitty as though she is still solid, and can easily harm her phased or no.
It must also be said that Kitty's abilities have to be triggered, though she has taught herself to phase on instinct, if she doesn't know an attack is coming, she can't phase to stop it.
While Kitty's father was murdered in Genosha, Kitty still has her mother, and as a result, Kitty is very protective of her mom. Should anything happen to Kitty's mom, it has the potential to once again send Kitty over the edge, needing to once again see a shrink to help cope with the loss.
When Kitty's father died it was the final straw to her personality and she snapped for a time. She required a good shrink to help her cope with all of the pain and suffering that had happened. As a result, Kitty still occasionally requires help in getting the darker part of her personality under wraps. She does still need a shrink to help her, rather than being able to work through the problems, herself.
